Grizzly bear injures 3 Montana hunters in separate attacks at national forest https://www.foxnews.com/us/montana-grizzly-bear-attack-hunters Two separate grizzly bear attacks in Montana this week left three hunters injured and had wildlife officials investigating whether the men had fought for their lives against the same animal. The men were attacked less than 12 hours apart near Cottonwood Creek on the west side of the Gravelly Mountains at the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) said Tuesday. All three men survived with moderate to severe injuries, officials said. Wardens were investigating whether the same bear was involved in both attacks. A single grizzly bear attacked the first pair of hunters at around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, officials said. The two men managed to fight off the bear and drive themselves to Ennis, where doctors treated them at a hospital. A second attack at around 6:30 p.m. also involved a single grizzly and two hunters, officials said. One hunter suffered injuries and was treated in Sheridan and later Butte. While officials haven’t released further details on the attacks, the two men injured in the first incident were spotted in hospital gowns at Shedhorn Sports in Ennis, where an employee said they were looking to buy new clothes. Terri James, the employee who spoke with the men, posted pictures on Facebook. James wrote that while the men said they had guns with them, it was bear spray that saved their lives. “The bear was on top of one of the men, and the other one was able to get to his bear spray,” James told KECI-TV. “He sprayed the bear, and that's what made the bear leave.” The FWP reminded people to be cautious outdoors because bears have been active this time of year. They advised to travel in groups and not only to carry bear spray, but also to know how to use it. If a grizzly bear is encountered, the agency said to slowly back away and leave the area.

WOW. I hadn't heard that yet. I have hunted elk in the Gravelly Mountains many times for elk . Did it say where those hunters were from??

Interesting. We make jokes about bear spray up here. Some guys carry a back-up handgun.

^ >> I'm not sure and not going to say either way what is legal or not but I have know two different people that shot grizzles in self defense and were thrown the book at for doing so. In archery it is a fine line if you care a bullet firing weapon while archery hunting. I'm not saying we care or not but I do beleive it maybe a judgement call by the DNR if an issue occurs.

If it ever happens to me, I hope I have the time to empty my rifle, then handgun, into the bear. I'll keep out of the hospital and deal with the law later, thank you very much.

I have found using a gun properly and accurately is more effective than a spray can of anything. I do not use critter repellent to get caught critters to take a ride in my truck to the fur shed.
Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.

^ I agree but we all don't have a good attorney in our back pocket. LOL
The two different groups I know of it happened too, it wasn't a pleasant experience. The one guy lost his hunting rights but can't remember for how long and it was a long drug out deal.

Up here, you pretty much have to prove they were charging when you shot.
The problem is that when they charge, you often don't have time to shoot.

I heard about this , too.
Encounters like that are not infrequent in southern parts down there , and in some other places , even here, are becoming more and more the same.
Especially when they hear gunshots in rifle season. Just as in some parts of AK, they have learned that there is food for the taking , and come running to the shot.
No spray for the ones I know who hunt, they have backup guards while processing deer, elk, etc . Shotguns, 375 H&H , 338 , 4570 , along with high powered revolvers are the norm with ones who are out in the bush hunting. In thick trees with limited vision , things can happen all too fast , so it pays to be ready in those areas .
I too have been asked to stand guard and simply keep an eye on everyone as they work ,and/or horses, with my 300 Weatherby mag M V . A nice way to enjoy the mountains and take back some good cuts of elk for the time spent watching .
Over protected bears tend to become as classic "debil chilluns " under the right circumstances, and bully everyone at will in learning to run to gunfire , knowing they will do as they please and get free meals.
