My son figures he lost a package form his mail box today. Post office said was delivered at 11:45am he gets home from work around 2:30pm. No package in mail box or on steps, web site said left in mail box..
He has been considering security camera's pretty much since he bough his house. Always seems to be lot of traffic on his street cars and foot, even though it's a side street.
Anyway after today's deal he is now all hot to get a camera up for sure.
Thing is we really don't know anything about them. I have camera's for my house but they are the old CCVT type that record to a VCR that is how out of the loop I'am. I only use them now when I'm in the garage to watch the driveway, or in the kitchen so I can see the smoker or caner going by back door. Don't need to record or save any pictures..
What is is everyone using these days that is good won't break the bank? I personally prefer to do hard wire not wire less. Mostly because they power with the cable from the camera to the recorder. Wireless I'm not sure how I would get power where he is going to need camera's to cover things. The door bell type thing they show on Tv is not a good choice.. Don't need to record to the cloud or any thing like that. Just need to be able to go back and look at something like the time from 11:45 to 2:30.
Whats good brand for a reasonable price guys?

Mac

Why not the doorbell camera? They have both wired and wireless options, and can be viewed anytime from a smartphone. I've never priced a security system, but I gotta imagine the doorbell camera with cloud storage is likely considerably cheaper. The wireless option uses a battery that lasts months between charges.

Or a trail camera if he's got a decent place to hang it that it's out of sight and won't get stolen.

I have game cam's set up to cover both barn's, back gate, house etc. Kinda a PITA to change out the SD cards and check them, but that's what I got.

The big choice is wether to get WiFi cameras or hard wired. I’ve had both and the both have plus and minuses.
You just have research them to figure out what works for you.

We have Arlo Pro inside/outside wireless cameras that work off an Arlo base unit that plugs into your router and creates it's own Wifi to link to the cameras. There is no monthly fee with 5 cameras or less and it gives you a notification on your phone and sends you an email if a camera picks up something. The videos stay on the Arlo server for 30 days and you can download them if you want and if you plug a USB drive into the base they are saved to it automatically. I have had zero problems and am very happy with the way it works. Has night vision too.

Could you post the particulars please? I went to their site but they don't seem to offer what you have now. What plan do you have?

Well the kid got his package...Guess it went to the wrong address and that person was honest enough to stop drop it at his house. He still wants to get camera's because of the traffic around his place. Also if he'd have had a camera showing his mail box he'd have had the mail man not dropping the package.. So could argue that case..

tlguy
A doorbell type cam for him really would face in a way that wouldn't show much as far as packages coming..He really does need to make some changes to his front step to help with things left at the door not being seen from the street, and we have talked about that already..

I've looked at wireless camera's I even have one the wife bought me that can go to our WiFi router. I haven't hooked it up because it requires an outlet to plug it into..Being I'm in an older home I don't have outlets like newer homes. So powering it up in a good location is a problem. If I was building a newer home I'd have outlets put in outside places where camera's should go. My son is in the same situation as far as how to power camera's in best locations. That is why I think personal he should look at wired systems? Unless he did battery powered WiFi. then ya got batteries to mess with. He does have trail cams he could use but doing batteries and SD cards would be a pain. If camera's are placed where someone can't mess with them..
To cover his yard and garage I think he'd need probably 4 camera's..
Maybe he should just go to Harbor Freight or Menards do one of their lower end hard wire????

Sorry for the delay, got mine from Best Buy, it would be the Arlo Pro 2 now where I got the Pro. No monthly fee with 5 cameras or less, if you went with 6 cameras or more I think it's 9.95 a month. There is no wires, all wireless, easy installation.

Best Buy still might have some Pro systems, I helped a friend install his system a couple weeks ago. The cameras come with a magnetic round base that the camera sticks to and you can move it around until it is aimed where you want it. I have had some real strong winds and they do not move. I ran an AC adapter to some of mine on my outside buildings that I was able to. The batteries last about 6 months before they need charged. It shows you how the battery is on the app on your phone or a computer if you log in. Yell if you have any more questions.

We have the Arlo Pro 2 with 2 cameras from Best Buy. We also purchased the wall mounts for the cameras. The batteries last 2 - 3 months for us before they need to get charged. The can be wired to maintain the battery which if I remember also unlocks som added features. The no monthly subscription and all recordings stay with us and not in the cloud are what sold us. Good luck on your purchase.

Whichever system you go with make sure the resolution is good enough to get detailed video of the perps at the distance you need. A lot of cams I’ve looked at might work fine at the Liquor store door but wouldn’t get the details you need for positive if at say 50’
