What area did you draw? Might be able to tell you what your chances are of mid 70s, or where to start.

No, they are not related to a goat, they are their own species.

Antelope hunting is a freaking blast. I cannot wait for next season when I plan to hunt the Red Desert (9 preference points)

Being this is your first rodeo, you have your gear ready, area that you are hunting. Now is the time to figure out what happens when the boots hit the ground.
Speed goats all look about the same size for the most part, especially for a rookie. If you are hunting with a buddy, carry an empty rifle and have your spotter give you a round when a GOOD buck presents himself with a good shot.
Otherwise, you will come home with a decent mediocre buck and wish you held out for a bigger one.

If you are driving out and are coming from the east, spend a day in Custer State Park to get a good look at trophy bucks and the non shooter bucks on the hoof in their natural environment. This will help you to judge a true trophy class animal when you see one during your hunt.
When scoring goats it is only a few inches difference between a decent buck and a real good bucking. Studying them on the hoof is always a plus.

There is a lot of good advise that has been posted above by others. Take the bits and pieces of info that we have given you and have yourself a awesome hunt.

1. If time allows. Spend a day or in Custer State Park looking at trophy animals on the hoof.
2. If hunting with a partner, have him carry your ammo..

Good luck

Thanks for all the advice. I'm ready to go. I really want to focus on a nice buck. I plan on looking over as many as I can and then working on getting close enough for a shot on one that look "right" to me. The time away is what I'm really looking forward to. Now stress, just me and the great state of WY.

I don’t want to be a negative person, but your asking advice on how to shoot a buck just under B&C on your first antelope hunt. It’s a tall goal.

I’ve hunted Wyoming several times. 5 points doesn’t mean much with point creep. Units that used to take 0-1 points now require 3-4 points to draw. They’re units where 14”s (a good buck) are max expectations. 70”s would be a monster there.

I’d suggest you enjoy your hunt and shoot a mature representative of the species, whatever that means for your unit. If you get caught up on the numbers game, you’ll probably be disappointed in the hunt.

brymoore, I don't take your comments as negative at all. They are realistic. I guess I'm like every hunter and dream of big bucks. I hope I can get a good one but like you said a mature representative is my realistic goal.

Here's the deal on Antelope. The difference between avg and awesome is almost negligible.

The real trophy from a Pronghorn hunt is that they live in the wild sage lands waste lands out west - good for your soul.

Are so easy, it can be a social hunt......great for kids, and wives, family, and friends - Good for your loved ones souls.

Plus, its the one of the best meats on the planet - Good for your belly.

Wait till the last day. grin

Thanks for all the information and advice. I was able to hunt 1.5 days before I found a nice buck in a spot for a stalk. He was bedded down so I used a washout to get within 60 yards of him. From there I watched him for 10 minutes before deciding to step out and make him stand up. When I did, he turned broadside and I was able to shoot. He didn't go far. I'm not sure of how many bucks I say in the 1.5 days, but it was crazy. I'm guessing I passed up bigger but this guy had big cutters so that got me excited. It was a great trip even if it was quick. The people of Wyoming are great. I had guys stopping me on the road to show me bucks, one guy even had me jump on his ATV and he drove me around to show me bucks because he was tagged out.

Sounds like a great time. Nice to hear there are still places out there with people like that.

That is great. I didn't think it would take you 3 days to find a good goat. Great job.

Can anybody recommend an outfitter that can take a canadian out antelope hunting that’s not a draw or are they all draws? I would like to do it with a bow, maybe over a watering hole.
Thanks.
