does it have a reddish belly pretty common small snake in Mich. maybe came in on lumber or steel crates??

The Dekay's Brown Snake is very common in Ohio too, but most people never notice them, because they are tiny and mostly hide. I have seen most of them as they are being slurped down by a friend's red tailed hawks, while we are practicing falconry. It's not uncommon for the hawks to catch several a hunting trip. Here's a Dekay's Brown Snake that was in my driveway. Keith

It looks like a red bellied snake to me.If the belly is bright orange,that's it.They are very similar to the Dekay. and inhabit similar terrain.The Dekay's belly is more yellow,possibly pink,not nearly as brilliant.You have both in your State. Red belly snake not a Dekays we have a lot of them here in MN but most people never notice them due to their size Very mild mannered and have never heard of one biting someone
