OLD WOLFERS NEVER DIE as long as we keep them alive.
After reflecting on some of my conversations with Mike Laughlin I went back to one of the oldest books on coyote trapping published. WOLF and COYOTE TRAPPING by A R HARDING. Now a lot of trappers have put this book down saying it was out of date, has no value, not the way we do it today (whatever) but what they fail to understand is this book was the first to compile information from old wolfer’s that wrote in Hunter Trader Trapper and Fur News in the early 1900’S . Most of these guys were wolfers working for the US Government (WOLF LIONS BEAR). They were the ones that took down the wolf when he was a real threat. I elected to share a few items with you in hopes that you consider some facts that many seem to overlook: this book was the foundation that actually produced the Wolfer of today. I hope you all consider adding this book to your library and thinkabout what Mr. Harding and FUR FISH GAME have contributed to the trapping industry. These line items are from the 1908 version. Please note the following,
1) Number of wolf and coyotes harvested across the USA in 1907
2) Bounties paid
3) Cost to the cattleman/rancher
4) US BIOLOGICAL SURVEY/STUDY ON COYOTE RESPONSE TO LURE/ATTRACTANTS at National Zoological Park
5) Trap Pan Tension and trap size
6) Gloves and scent
7) Non-freezing bedding
8) Drags and chain
All of which are covered by today’s pros.
I like the reference to the Gila Wilderness, my old stomping grounds
There is a lot to think about here. I recommend you read and listen to the old sage’s, like Mike, Wiley Carrol, Sherm Bloom, Wayne Derrick, Gerold Weiland. John Ehn and the many others (more noted in print as lure dealers with many miles). Read the old writer’s and their stories, lots wisdom.
