I know it's lousy, but the best picture with both in it. The second bear looks too big for a cub, and the larger one I was pretty sure was a male based on spring pics.

What you think?

Black bears. Sow and a cub are my bet.

I'd bet too, but cub looked too big. I'll try for better pics

Without something of a known size it's pretty hard to say. One of the best ways to tell a boar from a sow is a boar has blockier shoulders, which you can't see from this pic. The one on the left could be a yearling but it's hard to say. Bet if you get better photos you'll be able to tell.

Sow and cub. Keep in mind Cubs will usually stay with mom until 3 yo

My photo is a sow & her two 1.5 year old cubs, we think. I talked to the guy that put the collar on her.

Ya, when you are setting a foot snare, you need to be happy with whatever you get. I see no small cubs, but would obviously like a male. there is another one that was on the bait today, and this one looked fine.

I guess the fact is, if I try for him and get either mother or cub, I need to be ok with that.

If you are/were using bucket snares, you can avoid catching smaller bears by mounting the bucket head high.

P.S. If you are using ground snares there is a way to use them in a bucket using a 220 bodygrip if it is legal.

I'm old fat & out of shape but can release any cub and some yearlings with no help. Released this one last year. Use a stop (3") to limit loop size and some small bears will slip out.

Ya, The one I would like to target isnt noticeably larger than what i am assuming is the mother. She might actually be larger.

Maybe ill just find a new spot with different bears.

Ebsurveyor,

Whats your procedure for releasing one from a foot snare? I see you had that one in a foothold, but a snare makes me think nope.lol

Yup. Mom and cub. On the bait right now.

Another bear been coming in alone, but won't risk snaring this site
