I’ve been using mainly Bridger #2 2 coiled off set dogged and dogless traps for coyote, which some I have 4-coiled, I like the dogless 2 coiled better. I’ve caught reds, greys, raccoons in them as well. And one bobcat. If I’m targeting fox, I mainly use duke 1.5. I’ve caught a few coyotes in the duke 1.5, no problem with holding them but usually not a high pad catch. I did purchase some bridger 1.65s and one bridger 3 this year, so I’m excited to use them. So that leads me to my question-I’d like to purchase some other traps to try/test and see if I like them more, in terms of bedding and handling of the traps. I don’t mind modifying my own traps. I actually enjoy it. So based on my target animals, what traps would you recommend and why? I know certain traps have caused a pissing match on trapper talk, that’s why I’m posting here. So if you’d rather not answer other than through PM, that’s fine. I’m not opposed to buying multiple brands of traps and running them. Actually gives me a reason to spend some of my overtime money.

I really like mb 550s for fox and coyote. I’ve caught skunks, coons, reds, and badgers in them and it has held up fine to all of them. Always a good catch high up on the paw. I love fully modified Bridget #3s for bobcat and coyote but I don’t use them much here because the land I trap has a good possibility of catching someone’s dog and the 550 looks less intimidating and is more forgiving on smaller animals. Really it’s more for PR that I mostly use the 550s just cause they look gentler to someone who doesn’t trap. I know people have strong opinions about this but if you don’t mind tinkering and tweaking then dukes get the job done for the least money. I’ve used em plenty and they’ve served me well, but they just don’t hold up to a coyote with a nasty attitude as well as the more expensive brands. It’ll hold em but sometimes you come away with a mangled up trap. I don’t like dogless traps, I’ve tried several.

Thanks Bob, I’m open minded to change and not afraid to try anything, especially if it makes sense. I get the PR thing. I’ve snapped my hand in my Bridgers to show people it’s not that bad, not in those duke 1.5s though, they are mean for their size lol. I love the size of the #3 bridger OS, can’t wait to try it. I’ve always heard good things about the mb’s, few of my friends swear by them. My one statement is a little confusing, I like the dogless 2 coiled over 4 coiled, hard to get lower pan tension. I prefer the dogged bridger over dogless but both seem to perform well for me. Thanks again for the input

The new Duke 550 is a great trap right out of the box.

The #2 4 coiled Duke square jaw Is a great trap for either fox or coyotes. Just remove the second set of springs If you think the trap Is to strong.
