This was a wind turbine on fire near Abilene, TX. a couple of weeks ago. Burned about 300 acres or so of pasture land.
A man from Odonnel, TX up near Lubbock showed me a picture of 5 of them on fire at one time. Said was caused by lightning strikes.
Lots of wind farms going in about 60 miles North of me and the Forest Service has moved in a fire crew with equipment into Brady, TX. and one of them told me last week it was because of the wind turbines.
13 miles North of me there is currently a 400 acre solar operation being built. I would rather have the solars instead of the windmills.
It appears there's lots of oil in the turbines.

As I understand things, the turbines cost more to build, install and maintain than they ever will produce in electricity. Government subsidized.

Not to mention, the huge carbon footprint they leave behind from manufacture/construction.

Three Mile Island nuclear plant is closing today.

Can't sell their power, I guess gas is producing it cheaper.

1 unit will take 60 years to totally shut down at a cost of 1.5 billion, while the other is expected to be down in 2059.

After decades of opposing nuclear power many on the left have now started supporting nuclear because they realized it's carbon free generation is being replaced by fossil fuel. Numerous of our nuclear plants are closing early (before license expiration) because the power they produce is more expensive than gas generation. Part of that is due to cheap gas and part due to excessively burdensome regulation by the NRC pushing up the cost. As Hippie mentioned, today is the last day of generation for the Three Mile Island plant. It is being shutdown due to being noncompetitive with gas generation whereas it's current operating license doesn't expire until 2034. Conversely, Duke Energy announced it plans to request 20 yr license extensions for 6 plants in the Carolinas.

I have never believed in windmills. All of the power generated by them out here goes to the Coastal area and mainly Houston. If they need power down there let them build the wind farms in the ocean. If we can drill an oil well in 5000 ft. of water, shouldn't be a problem putting up a windmill. They wouldn't ruin the country and have power lines running in every which direction across the country side.

Several years ago I was in a county court meeting where developers were asking for a 10 year tax rebate of $0 and then taxed at their current market value on a proposed wind farm.
When asked about ownership of the company it was 50% Chinese Co.(China Government) and 50% United Steel Workers of America. They were denied the rebate and they said they would build it in another county and the County Judge offered to drive them to the next county.

So USWOA went to the bottom of all lists I keep. When times get hard, they can eat crap with the chickens as far as I am concerned.

Yep, as of noon today, TMI stopped making electric.

Well natural gas has certainly been cheap this year. The average price so far at the Waha Hub in West Texas is 65 cents per MMBTU.
For two months this year there was a negative price. If you put any gas in their line they charged you 6 dollars per MMBTU to take it to the flare.

Didn't the one in Japan shut down a lot quicker in 2011. I guess all is well since its never on the news.

I do not expect the Left to shift to nuclear power. They don't truly believe in climate change/global warming. It is a disingenuous ploy to garner votes from a specific segment of the population.
That specific segment of the voting population is ignorant and unbending, therefore unable to reverse their hatred of "evil" nuclear power.

Evil nuclear power is spewing into the pacific ocean at the daiichi plant in japan everyday. That mess was built by general electric, so japs could cook their rice without having to gather wood.

Get a grip man, lets burn coal.

Yup, Put people back to work digging coal. We know how to burn it clean. Scrub the smoke stacks of sulfur and put it on our fields for fertilizer and grow food.
All ready government controlled and no votes to be had is why.

Had one catch on fire like that about a half mile from home last summer. It was at night, very cool looking fire in the sky!
Fortunately, it was in the middle of a green cornfield so no danger of collateral damage. The fire chief told me they just showed up and watched it burn - department has nothing to reach that high.

There is no such thing as "clean coal", even some coal executives will admit that. We are producing so much natural gas that we are flaring much of it off because we have no use for it and it cannot be stored. It should be used to replace coal where ever possible. It is much much cleaner and is going to waste now.

Having all your eggs in one basket is never a good idea. A balanced mix of electric generation sources serves us much better. Something like 25% nuclear, 25% gas, 30% coal, 20% renewable (solar, wind, hydro).
