I tried using IMR 4064 all the way up and down the powder recommendations using a hornady 95 grain SST bullet. I could not not get it to group at all. The best was in the 2 to 3 inch group at 100 yards.

I can grab this rifle a weatherby 243 and a cheap box of hornday whitetail 100 grain soft point and shot sub moa all day with it. So I know its not the scope or the rifle. I am using good new brass and I have prepped it very well also federal match primers.

I have about 300 rounds of the SST bullets that I would like to shoot at a low or medium velocity to let my 9 year old son deer hunt with.

I am seeking any power recommendations you might have for a 95 grain SST bullet in 243. My go to powder is usually IMR 4064 as this is the first time I could not get it to work. I dont like stocking alot of powders but I have several pounds of H1000, W748, IMR 4198, CFE BLackout all of which im sure are not right for a 243.

I have a small amount of H4895 that I could try. Any input please????

4895 works good.

I am guessing you tried different seating depths ?

Honestly I didnt experiment too much with the depth???? I guess I could fool with that some more.

Try IMR 4350. It works well for me with either 90 or 100 grain bullets. I am not a big speed guy so I stay close to the middle of the recommended loads.

I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

IMR 4895 worked well in all 4 of my 243's over the yrs. 18-24" barrels. I think H4895 is a tick slower burning so should work also. 85-100 gr bullets.

I didn't have much success with my 6mm Rem (very similar to .243) until I tried IMR 7828 SSC. Using 100 gr Sierra's it gives consistent sub MOA.

Bullet seating depth can change things a bunch. You can have a longer O.C.L. than sammi specs so long as the cartridges will feed out of the magazine. Plenty of info on the net on how to find a good seating depth for your rifle.

Slit one of the cases with a disk on a dremel. ( just one slit in one side to just below the shoulder. Inser the bullet long and carefully chamber that round and carefully get it back out of the gun. Repeat this a few times and measure the OAL each time. Take the middle of the measurements ya got and now you have the distance to the lands. Back it of a few thou and start there is it will fit in the mag. Then start messing with different powders if ya can't get it to shoot that way.

Scuba1's method will work, or you can do the same thing just using a Sharpie to mark the bullet so you can see where the rifling contacts it, and where the case mouth was with the bullet against the rifling. The tricky part is making sure the bullet did not stick in the rifling and pull out of the case a bit. The other problem with this method is the variability in bullet length especially with soft nose bullets. Although these are the traditional methods of determining where to set your bullet seating die for what you ultimately determine to be the optimum jump to the rifling, there are better methods available now that won't break the bank. Look at the Hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparators. These simple tools solve both problems described above. Even with these new tools, Sucba1's recommendation of taking repeated measurements is a very good idea.

If changing the seating depth or if seating the bullet out near the lands makes the the OAL to long for the cartridge to feed properly then you might change powders. But before I did any powder changing I would change to a Magnum rifle primer. I just checked and in the #12 & #13 Speer manuals recommend the CCI 250 with all the loads listed for the 90 & 100 gr. bullets in the Weatherby 240 Mag. Starting load with the Magnum primers is 38 gr of 4064 (2700v) and max at 44 gr. (3100v)

Since you said you wanted to go to a low or medium load then the 4198 is a powder to go to which is a reduced load of 20 gr at 1831 and 22 gr at 2024. Even the reduced load they used a magnum primer.
Of the other powders you listed that you currently have I would try the W748. [Be sure to change to a magnum rifle primer with that powder no matter what it is in since it take a higher ignition spark to ignite it properly.] A powder charge of 34 gr W748 with CCI 250 primers might work.

If it were me I would go to 4350 or 4831 rather than 4895. The burn pressure rates of 4064 and 4895 are extremely similar so getting a rifle powder to perform better I would use a very different type of powder pressure burn rate to see if that would improve accuracy. You are trying to change the barrel harmonics since it shoots well with the 100 gr Hornady bullets.

If these changes don't work my guess is the 95 SST bullet just does not stabilize correctly in your rifle barrel. Although it is totally up to you I would then buy a box of 100 gr. Hornady spire point bullets and see if they shoot accurately in your rifle.
Hopefully it is a simple as changing to the magnum primers.
Pete

I would sooner look at the SST themselves. I tried to get them to work in my 6.5 Grendel bolt gun. I know it's not your .243 dia bullets but I have seen the issue in other caliber SST. Just couldn't get a group. I then noticed the finished rounds OAL varied several thousandths, like .015 to a little over in some cases. Started measuring the bullets alone from the base to the ogive with my new to me comparator. To my amazement the bullets varied the same amount. I segregated them as to their length, loaded them, and shot groups. They were great. Mix them and the groups sucked. I am not willing to buy 8 or 10 boxes of bullets and sort them just to get a 100 or so to satisfy my requirements. I went to Sierra 120 spitzers and haven't looked back. Great groups and deadly on deer. My longest shot being 170 yards. One shot and 35 yards later I had a dead deer. Couldn't get them to work in my 308 either, though at the time I didn't catch the length issue before I went to Nosler Partitions.

I suspect Paul is correct.

But I have been loading 4831 and have had no problems with 100 grain Hornadys.

There is information on , reduced loads for younger shooters, online. Not sure if it is Hornady. I loaded some for my grand daughter , in 7mm08. You can drop the speed and recoil, to suit. to a point. He might be happy with 2 or 3 inch groups. Train him , proper gun handling, trigger pull, gun safety. Keep it fun and good luck
