Using good ol' Indiana farm field top soil what ratio of wax to dirt do I use to make waxed dirt ? I think last year I used 1 pound of wax per gallon of dirt. That sound about right ? Can you use to much wax ? -Thanks

I made mine based on volume not weight. I got ratios off of previous posts on here.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

A pound per gallon works really good in the clay dirt the sandy dirt I get by with 3/4 lb.

Yeah to much can turn into a issue you can always heat it up and add some more dry dirt to even the ratio out if that happens. 1lb to 1 gallon always makes for good beddable wax dirt in the mixed soil types here in PA. 1 to 1 is more wax then needed. If not worried about the cost of flake wax then I would 1pound to 1 gallon if it starts to just look like brown (or whatever color your dirt is) wax balls to much wax add more dirt till it starts to go back to powdery looking dirt.

Go by the soil really if it gets over moist with wax you just add more dry dirt until its the way you want it. I'm looking to add coal shale to mine as dry dirt will be hard to find this year with the flooding.

2:1 of sandy dirt to wax -- the same ratio as SkyeDancer and Flipper. If you're using that good Midwest top soil, I'd recommend adding some sand to it. Flake wax is expensive.

2 gallons of dirt to 1 lb of wax for me. When I'm done it still looks a little dry but has never froze over on me.

I screened my dirt pretty fine, used a window screen, does that effect the amount of wax used ?

That fine of dirt might hold water on top of it, I sift on the windy days here to blow the fine (baby powder) stuff away so I have a courser dirt that drains better.

instead of buying the flake wax has anyone melted down blocks of parafin and used that in the same ratios?
