Bob, great idea. You also reminded me keep a jug of table salt like Morton's. It melts ice right away super cheap small enough to store easily. I like to spread some in front of the tires when I get out so when I get back I'm good to go, especially if snow or ice is thick.

A candle with 4 wicks and a bic lighter is awful handy also some parachute cord to tie back or up the extra links on your tire chains in case you have to use them. Also if I were you after you get to the camp I'd put the chains on all 4 tires right away and have tarp straps for chain tightners on the outside and check to make sure the chains fit before you leave for camp .
I make my own tire chains after seeing a friend struggle with his that were to small for his pickup.
While I'm at it I'd also suggest adding extra cross links which will improve the ride, those chains will have a cross every 4 side links add a cross link at the 2nd side link.

A long handled shovel is handy when and if you get stuck in deep snow or a small width grain scoop shovel with a D handle can be helpful to have two shovels in case your friend who is with you tries telling you your shoveling wrong he or she can then demonstrate how to do it right ha ha

Have fun and shoot straight !

I did forget, I do have a large heavy duty commercial type trash bag and and a couple emergency ponchos. I also always have several walmart plastic bags with me all the time, I always leave a place a little better than I found it by picking up some trash.

Also forgot the 1.5 gallon gas can, rope, parachute cord, several lighters, matches, fire starter, second tarp and a couple of small paperbacks.

I don't carry it much but I bought a handheld HAM radio(Baofeng UV-5R, only $23!) I have figured out how to set it up to scan, NOAA, County Dispatch(FD), DOT, Sheriff, Simplex and two Repeaters. We have large area with no cell phone signal. I can use it only as a scanner and in a true emergency now but plan to get a license this spring.

I'm thinking of buying a small/collapsible type of lightweight shovel, like 1 that could even be strapped to a snowmobile. Any thoughts on a good little shovel like that that those of us that snowmobile might like?

Chain, handyman jack, and t posts with a driver and come-a-long (poor mans 4-wheel drive and winch LOL)

If you dont have gear to get back on the road then you need a lot more paraphernalia for your long camping out session!

I also have a bag of potatoes in the back the truck. With potatoes you can make french fries, chips and Vodka ..... its like other vegetables are not even trying.

Bleeding out is the number one killer in the field and learning how to use a tourniquet will not only save your life it will save others lives. I like the rats tourniquets because it works on children and dogs. I use rubber bands to attach it to my stock, so I can get to it quick. If your using a chainsaw, I would have it on my person. I carry at least two.

LED headlamp so you can put your tire chains on in the dark without holding a flashlight in your mouth!
