danvee I to will be watching this post. I've tried couple kinds of different things. Tank on my trailer and hot water heater always little skunky smell.. do the bleach thing as a regular and have used the tank stuff they sell. Flushed and refilled. Not sure how old timers kept water for any length time. I can't seem to keep any in my tank log with out issues..

Change the anode rod to a aluminum/zinc one
The bitterness of poor quality last a lot longer than the sweetness of low price

Take the anode rod and use it to hammer trap stakes in the ground then replace it with a galvanized steel plug when you winterize it be sure to not put RV antifreeze in the hot water heater bypass it and things will be much better. Don't forget to use rectorseal on the plug so it can be removed if needed .
