Well make that the best backstrap, roadkill or not I ever ate. Picked up a dead fawn the other day on the road, on a 35 degree morning it was still very warm and limp on a busy side street. Picked it up to put the carcass in the woods for the wolves and ended up feeding most of the meat to the dogs and keeping the backstraps for myself since it was so fresh. Great choice. Backstraps so tender they'd make a millennial snowflake seem like a tough guy. Man that was good.

Done that myself. Especially the ones collected by my F-150. Have had quite a few friends call about deer they or someone they know hit and I go and get them. Doesn't make sense in wasting perfectly good meat. Sarge

I agree. If I see it get hit or it's as fresh as this one was I'm going to eat at least part of it same with my dogs. The carcass gets put in the woods for the wolves to come check out.

I keep count of the road kills I see on 10 miles of the road I travel going home from work from Jan to Jan. I don't count the ones the buzzards are working on off in the woods or trees just the ones I see along the road in the ditches. The total last year was 36 the year before was 32 and I an up to 16 this year.

If the blood is still fresh and they are warm, yep, some one gets the back strips and hams.

I pick up 2-3 roadkills a year, its the only venison I eat since I don't hunt deer. Young ones are yummy.

My family has a contract with 2 counties and many townships to pick up roadkill deer. Get from 5 to 25 a day. Summertime most are pretty ripe, even if just hit the night before. My father (91 tomorrow) skins and guts all the ones that are usable for animal feed in the family zoo. No one in my family eats rice, you wouldn't either after seeing these roadkills.
Nice french fries in the picture. Eric

I carried my step son squirrel hunting early one morning before his school and my work. We didn't fire one shot that morning. On our way back in to town I nailed a yearling with my bumper. I cleaned it when I got to work, and the wife fried up back straps that night. Meat is meat, makes no difference to me what I get it with.

I was out checking bear traps one morning at daylight when on my way back I noticed a 6pt laying on a guys lawn. I knocked on his door and asked if he wanted it and he had no idea it was there said its yours. So I called the warden service and got the deer. Man a young blueberry fed buck in Sept is as good as it gets.

You guys are like the vultures! Not saying I wouldn't do that though.

It is illegal to do that here unless you go through a legal processes. The animal would be rotten before you got the OK to take it here.

We used to pick up a lot of deer for dog food and human consumption. Just had to call the warden and get the OK. But now they have a law on the books that you aren't allowed to pick up roadkill unless you are the one who hits it. Not even legally allowed to pick up furbearers on the road. Guy last winter got a very hefty fine for stopping and cutting the antlers off of a nice buck that had been obliterated by a semi. Somebody on the highway saw him and called him in. Wish we could still pick them up.

I put those roadkill deer out in certain spots here, bobcats love them. Later winter all carnivores love them. The entrails make for very good fisher bait when trapping.
