What do you all like best with the cast offset jaws, 2 or 4 coil springs?

I only have 2 coil, but they are plenty strong for coyotes.

Mb 550 are plenty strong just 2 coiled imo. I have a few 4 coiled ones but if there is any chance of fox I wouldn't set a 4 coiled one. Never had a problem holding some big coyotes in 2 coiled.

I don’t mind saying I couldn’t set many four coiled ones in a day. My hands would be toast. Bought some used 550s that were four coiled and took them off immediately.

I bought all mine four coiled about 7 years ago, I took the extra springs off immediately and I have yet to put them back on. They’re plenty strong just 2 coiled for our Montana coyotes

2 for me and never had an issue. 4 would be better in frozen ground where the trap has a good chance of freezing down.

After a few years mine get four coiled. You need the speed not so much the strength of four coils.

All mine are 2 coil too. I did order some 4 coil this summer, but immediately removed the two extras, just more spring than I need. I may put them on some older ones that could use a little help. But not till next season

I purchase the two coil but recently placed some smaller extra coils on them to get the trap pans up to 3 lb. pressure for coyotes. I don’t like messing with the dogs to adjust the pan pressure. Some of the traps only have 3 coils and some have four Also, ground out here in the Rockies can get frozen fairly early.

2 coil traps are more then enough strength. 4 coil traps in general are way over kill in my experience over my years. If you are frozen down it doesn't matter how much power you have it isn't going to help with 4 coils. Learn to keep your traps working is a greater concern and more effort should be put toward that important area.

A 2 coiled mb550 is stronger than a 4 coiled #4 duke. 2 coil is all you need.

Not the ideal trap for beaver but held a live 30 pound beaver by the hind foot in a 2 coiled offset mb550.

2 coils are plenty strong to hold but I run 4 to get the initial thrust to break thru frosty ground, even though I use waxed dirt. The lake effect weather here is a challenge even with waxed dirt. I used to run 2 but had toe holds and empty sprung traps, added the helpers , no more empty traps.. 4 coils also balance the power exerted to the jaws wish in turn makes the trap lock better and quicker. And I trap all season.... not just 2 weeks in the fall.

Bob, my MB 550’s have 2 lb., 2.5 lb. max pan pressure with two coils. Do you feel this is enough pan pressure for coyotes?

It's enough for about anything GT. The only reason to crank it up is avoidance of smaller critters.

I don't test pan tension. If a trap is strong enough with the spring tension it should give it reasonable pan tension. If I run old style dog and bolt pan set up I crank it to what I feel is reasonable tension to do what I need.

Offset for the mechanical advantage.
