The first one that pulled out was a small one which was the intention of the guy who was showing me how to do it. Then we had a pretty nice one climb the tree beside the set and pull out, so we made the loop stop a little smaller then I got a big sucker and he was gone too. I had two trail cams set there so I got most of it on cameras. I think there are better ways to do it than he was showing me, it didn't seem very reliable but I didn't know better at the time.

I never had good luck snaring bear in Maine (three trips). We hooked more than one bear, but the buggers would trash the set and runn oft. I blamed the type of snare we owned. I can't remember what brand they are.The only bears we got to tag were taken in Duke #15 footholds. Those are no longer legal to use.

I had more than my share of misses the first year & still have to many misses. But, never a pull out. That last 7 trappers tagged bears & those seven probably missed at least two or three bears each. Most years trapping bait sites we have a bear on the snare every night

Maine has new regulations this year and many of the old methods are no longer legal. Start with these new regs:

Bucket, Tube or Pipe-style Traps

Design Standards for Bucket, Tube or Pipe-style Traps Used to Capture Black Bears

Whenever a cable trap is used in conjunction with a device that is designed to capture a bear when it reaches into the device to obtain bait (e.g. bucket, tube, or pipe-style traps):
•The trigger must be recessed at least 12 inches below the opening of the device.
•The opening and inside diameter of the device must be no more than 6 inches.
•A bucket or other similar device can be used if it is modified to have an opening and inside diameter no greater than 6 inches.

Deployment Standards for Bucket, Tube or Pipe-style Traps Used to Capture Black Bears
•Animal-based bait and/or lure cannot be placed within the bucket, tube or pipe. Animal-based bait is defined as animal matter including meat, skin, bones, feathers, hair or any other solid substance that used to be part of an animal. This includes live or dead fish.
•Only non-animal based bait and/or lure can be placed within the device and it must be placed below the trigger.
•The opening to the device must be covered by a weight of at least 30 pounds when set, placed, and tended to prevent access by non-target species.

Sounds similar to what is being proposed in WI for bear.

Catch, next year or 2. Have to see how vacation time works out.

Yeah, ok. I will be game and hope we can have an adventure and make some memories so let me know! I just PM'd the OP to get the details as I am interested in both the trapping and treeing with dogs.

It sure was nicer when we could set two snares. I set my stop at 4" so most under 200 lbs will pull out.

Wish it wasn't a 30-hour drive! I would get in the truck and go right now.

Lots of lobsters 3 of my sons fish and i grew up scalloping and lobster fishing. I think boat price is $5.15-$5.25 lb now.

My relative owns Pucker Brush Guide service. He and his son are both excellent trappers as well as houndsmen. They have harvested at least 13 nice bears (several over 300-320lbs) in the last two weeks with many released. He told me he could take guys trapping bear as well as running hounds so potentially two bears. He also has his own lodge to stay in. I will meet up and let you trap off of my baits as well. Give him a call

Hey Scalloper, do you know Denny Davis or Paul Laney. I hunted with both of them (bear dogs) and guided for Denny before he sold out.

Thanks for the offer. If my boys were out of school I’d be all in! Good luck sounds like a great time.
