Went from Slick Trick to Rage Trypan. 100 grain. Both great heads. I have recovered every single deer I've shot with a Rage broadhead. I've stepped off the distance traveled after impact and the average is 45 yards. And there usually is a spray painted carpet of bloody leaves to follow. Check out the entrance hole.... That is a great buck Joe! Did you target that buck pre season or do you not target a single animal when hunting? Joe it would be nice to start a thread with buck kills this year. Yours would be a great one to start that thread.

In the past I have shot Muzzys and Thunderheads with a high degree of performance. We now shoot Magnus Stinger serrated broadheads, excellent penetration. You use 100g? Yes sir- shooting 100gr

Always a good debate and a learning experience as well. Shot placement is the key for any broadhead to do it's job. When we compare broadheads we aren't talking about the same placement of the arrow in each case. So, many times we are comparing apples to oranges.
In my case with the broadheads I use I don't always get a lot a of blood even with a pass thru. In the picture I posted was an exception this time. That arrow must have been placed very good to get that kind of blood trail. I usually find some blood but seem they bleed out inside for me more often and draining the tank.

Good point. Maybe there should be a thread about target area and distance? I know myself. I know in the yard I can consistently hit a 3" circle all day long gap shooting. In the field...I never aim for the heart. I aim for the area near the heart and lungs. If I'm lucky I hit the the heart, more often then not I double lung, sometimes I liver. Blood trail IMO depends on shot placement more than on the difference on broadhead. edit: I'm referring to hunting whitetails which we all know are thin skinned and weak bones. Not sure about Elk or Mulies or whatever else.

Just wondering what make of broadhead are you using? What grain, 3 blade etc.?
Sabertooth Steel Force. Incredible. Underrated.

I don't know why, but every entry hole with a Rage head is twice (or more) of the diameter of the expanded blades, in my experience. When I get pass throughs the exit is big as well, but not bigger than the entry. Again, I don't know why. I've seen entry holes with Rage heads that had to be 6 inches in diameter, just crazy. The hide must really stretch inward on penetration, then the blades fly open blowing out such a huge cut. On severe quartering shots, I don't always get pass throughs. But the entry hole is so devastating that the blood swath is three times what I see with fixed heads. And when you hit a deer with a Rage, they just act different, like they really hunch up and run off as if they are severely hurt. I have heard other hunters share the same thing. I am not trying to convert or persuade anyone here. I don't care what you shoot. I just know what I've seen with my own eyes. I went away from Rage for awhile, because the older "slip cam" style had a tendency to unscissor when bumped, which I hated. Just sloppy. But the new Hyperdermic Trypans have a locking collar that keeps them nice and solid on your bow and in the quiver. I really like them. Just my opinion, guys. Joe Goodman www.JoeGoodmanPrints.com

I never once saw this buck before or during the season until December 12th, a week after our Ohio gun season. I have a small lease and I ran a few Browning cameras on it from September on. Never saw him. On Dec. 12th, I had a break from my business and pulled SD cards from my cameras, and there he was, crossing a creek and coming straight toward the camera. I slipped in there on the 14th and he showed up at 4:15, twenty yards from my box blind. Moral of the story, do not EVER give up. You never ever know when a good deer will appear. My guess is, somebody pushed him off a neighbors property on a deer drive and I benefited. And also...without cameras, I never know that deer is around and I would not have had the opportunity.

Interesting story. We can't run trail cameras here but they would be a great tool. Thanks for sharing that story and a picture of your buck. You really should start a buck thread here on TM. Thanks
