I just happened to come across a couple pounds of cleaned clams. We are going to freeze some and make chowder with them but im wondering if I should try to render some or taint some for future use. Im not really worried about using them for anything else other then canine so I guess my question is do they serve a purpose for canine. I would only set aside a pint of them to use, the rest will be eaten by us.

there gunna sit outside for a day or 2 with some condensed liquid smoke and then get stabilized. If nothing else it will be a good smell to slow them down.

I'm sure my response is too late but I heard of some people using clams in a recipe (for bobcats) that as said above was smoked. But they never said anything bout tainting them, I made a batch up last year and got a couple kit fox but that was bout it. Not sure if I will make that again.

Ya can't miss fur if yur traps are out somewhere.
Or so I've been told.

If they don't work to your liking for canines, you could probably use it for otter.

My best 'coon year was the year I used freshwater clams for bait. Clams in a blender with some castors and oil sacks, and hit it with preservative right away. Never tried it on canines, but don't see why it wouldn't work.

The following year all clamming on the St. Croix was OFF LIMITS. A year later, trapping on the St. Croix was banned when the Feds took over.

I'm not a real "Let it rot" guy. May get their attention, but the fresh clam/castor smell drove the 'coon crazy. Just my observation over a one season period.

Funny think is these things arn't rotting...they changed color to a grey from tan and they kind of smell like dirt...nothing real strong or rotten smelling..my guess is it would make a decent base for a bait to add other ingredients to, I burp it every night with my other stuff and smell along with the other stuff and nothing seems to change with it....on a side note, I almost blew my face off when I tried to smell my one jar before the gases escaped...that was a dry heaving experience
