My home town in southern Minnesota has the distinction of being the place of the largest mass execution in U.S. history.

Dwight '' Dike'' Beede football coach at Youngstown State University from 1938-1972 invented the penalty flag that is used today. At a home game in oct 1941 he introduced the flag system still used today. Prior to using a flag, penalties were signaled with a whistle or horn and created confusion on the field and for the spectators. The flag being silent eliminated this problem.

Mankato, grew up 6 miles south of there.

There is an imaginary line called the "pine tree line" or the tension zone that runs in WI from roughly Sheboygan to the north and west up roughly Hudson WI. This line represents the upper limit of the southern deciduous forest ecosystem from the northern boreal forest. Being a temperate terrestrial ecosystem this line can range north and or south considerably yearly or on cyclic cycles. The basic difference or dividing factor is south of the line the July average temperature day and night combined is 72 degrees (warm summer and to the north the July average temperature is below 72 degrees (cool summer). As one can imagine along this zone one will find great diversity of flora and fauna which we have in WI and especially band along this zone. Now many may say that this is imaginary and there is no real line. The atmosphere based on jet streams etc. control the temps and the type of climate and weather. Here in WI over the last decade we have had 12-15 major rain events which means there was more than 8 inches in a 24 hour period and all but two of those occurred within 50 miles north or south of that line, so there are atmospheric conditions that create and maintain this temperate terrestrial ecosystem. What we do not have in WI are sufficient altitudes that create different ecosystems but we have great diversity due to the clash between these two systems. Our state agriculture and crops mirror this naturally occurring system as well. What has been occurring over the last 30-50 years is a very slight and slow warming, which is made up mostly due to warmer winters then summers.

That's more like 11 miles south. I did most of my trapping as a youth between Good Thunder, Rapidan and Mankato -- Blue Earth, Le Sueur and Maple rivers. I knew all those roads like the back of my hand, and did a lot of fishing for cats at the dam.

i've been scouting the area rivers for fur and always find it interesting that all our rivers around flow north.the Genesee river starts in PA and if i dont get out i'll end up in lake Ontario.
