Just by how it it works. I would think curiosity or gland
You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

The way I use it is I put food (bait) in the pipe & then I put gland on the backside of the pipe. Works pretty good for me.
Ya can't miss fur if yur traps are out somewhere. Or so I've been told.

There are bunches of pipe dream sets on you tube. There is a lot more to it than just a pipe. Mark makes a lure called pipe dope and I doubt there is a better lure made for use with his set. I haven't tried any gland lures , I try to build the set just like Mark shows it. It is a killer set and having it in my arsenal was worth every penny I spent to gain the knowledge. Coyote U teaches fur put up and just the skinning tips alone is worth the price of admission.

Made two pipe dream sets last year to test them. Used gland lure but had no luck. Switched to food or curiosity lure, can't remember which, and had success. Want to use this set a bit more this coming season and from the comments it seems a bait is what to use. Thanks for the replies.

Bait is what I use mostly. Late season during the cold and snow I will take a q tip with a smear of (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) fire or fatal breath bend it over double and hang it off the lip of the pipe I make mine just like Zags my trap pan is about 8 inchs straight back no offset. My only real difference is type of trap I'm running #2 bridger dogless and #2 modified duke round jaw with black nylon window screen. One thing I learned with the window screen I was originally putting it on top of the pan and cut to where it fit inside the jaws with the sprinkle of grass clippings on top. The coons would mess with it and pull the screen off. I now cut a notch in the screen put it under the pan then grass clipping over the top. After doing this I started picking up the coon that messed with them. One more tip that I do if you have the perfect spot but no weed clump for the pipe to be in. I will drive my pipe in the ground then I take my stake drive and make 3 or 4 hole about a inch away from the base of the pipe. Go get some tall weeds double them over and stuff down your stake hole. It kinda like doing a flower arrangement but it works out really well. Also Mark has detailed instructions on how he makes his pipe set on his web page. I believe there are to write ups on it Justin

More for the grass settings. Ill just make a little mound of bean and corn stubble for the pipe if my set is in the field. But usuall im on the edge in the grass or in the tractor path to the field

If ya want em to pee on it use gland, if ya want em to try and eat it use food/curiosity that tastes good, to them anyway. The way Zag beds the trap works very well in grass with root systems. The pipe provides not only a weather resistant lure vestibule but an awesome focal point that has the smell above ground up in the air currents. Win, win.. And ya can take it a way when you pull.. Heres another trick, if you see where a coyote is leery of the pipe, take it away and just leave the hole and see what happens.
Common sense catches alot of fur.. Pay homage to all you harvest..

I talked to him at the demo. I asked about using it in the woods on logging rds. He said just replace the grass with cut up leaves. Mark said it would work. I remember him saying a food lure. . Mark also told me to use a food lure or bait.

That's cool. Nice cat. Did u use gland lure or a food lure on cats? It was food not sure which one for that set. It was deer based with either dunlap bait solution or jamesons. J

Illinideer going to have to give it a try on cats to see how it works. Just have to figure out how to drive plastic pipe into rock. Lol. Do trap a lot of pasture and will make more than two sets this season. Since the rainy season always seems to start the day I set traps and stops the day I pull them, this wet weather set should shine.

Zags bedding style realy shines in wet weather. I had a compass set that didnt connect for about 20 -25 days. It was on a corner between me and my friends pasture. We had rain snow freeze thaw and repeat. I would hit it with fox pee after a hard rain ended upwith a nice female coyote. For some reason this spot is only good for one coyote. Going try some sabertooth drags with pipe sets this year to see if i can keep from spoiling a good location Justin

Just saw this..... Yes, put something in the pipe they like the taste of and want MORE of..........this is NOT a "scent post" set......its an "above ground" dirt hole! You want them there for 7 minutes, NOT 7 seconds and gone. I caught six bobcats in one day with pipes........all released since no tags. I have seen this Pipe Dream videos on You Tube.....NONE of them are the way I do it, but at least SOME of them give me credit for it! I had a Coyote U class this weekend and we watched some of the videos during a break in the action! I WILL be making a video for my website and YouTube to show how I do it.....and it will be done on real-trap conditions and will be done professionally............Stay Tuned. Till then, read the original articles on my website www.coyoteu.com and certainly read the million-hit thread located somewhere on this site.....as MOST EVERY question that could be asked and has been answered (often more than once) on that post! Try it...you will like it! Last year, some very VERY good trappers I know tried it in earnest for the first time, and it saved their season. They finally saw the weather I battle annually that forced me to come up with a solution if I wanted to land trap in the fall in Central New York...................and they will never go back! Zagman

Butch nice catch! I did well with pipe sets last year while playing in the mud. Worked well in the rain. When all the dirt holes filled with water, the pipe sets were working. Finally toward the end that's all my remakes were.

I prebaited pipes, collected and cut up grass, cut a bunch of screen covers up and made a nice orderly system to carry everything. I can knock out a complete set in less time than it took me to write this. Well close anyhow...
Wish I had more time to trap....

If you live in the East and do not use Mark Zagger's method you are working too hard. If you want to see the entire system, go to his coyote U. I am pretty careful where I spend money. That was money well spent. Mac

Due to very wet weather I’ve done 90% pipe dream sets so far this year. NEVER caught anything with them in the past but thought there was no way I was going to get traps in the ground if I didn’t try it again.
Due to extreme mud and more rain coming, I put in 4 pipe dream sets. We got 2 inches of rain. First catch—a yoy red fox. Mud ball but still caught. Over the next three days I had a pull out (probably coyote by size of catch circle) and two more reds.
The season is early and I expect this set will shine.
Update
Two weeks later I have the cold to end all colds. Pulled my sets when we were facing snow and I knew I was going to really be sick. In those pipe dreams, I caught reds, big boar coon, skunks, and some fantastic coyotes. More than half the sets were lured with gland lures. The others with bait. It didn’t make any difference. The pipes were chewed and all but two catches were deeply in the traps. I’ve never experienced anything like it.

I haven't trapped canines very much for the last 10 years or more but had time this year since I'm semi-retired. I put out 12 sets the first day and had 2 coyotes the next day. The sets were made 50/50 pipe dream and standard dirt holes. I added 12 more sets and kept the same 50/50 ratio. I ended up with 6 coyotes in 5 checks and pulled them yesterday. 4 of the 6 came from the pipe dream sets. I used only food lure in the pipe. I had never made this set but had to try it after reading the 40 pages in the archives. I didn't have time to practice so had to learn in the field. I made a few mistakes at first but soon discovered the bedding is way more secure than I've ever had in the past and I started doing it on all my sets. Very solid. I highly recommend you all learn how to make this set. Thanks Mr. Zagger for bringing this to all trappers.
57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

Set it and forget it!
That's what I always say......
I have an editor/producer ride and film with me yesterday and there now WILL be a Pipe Dream Set video for viewing showing the way I/me/MZ makes the set. If you go to YouTube there are several on there showing it, and while most give me credit for the set, all of them don't quite do it the way I do......doesn't mean it won't work their way, but most are just about the pipe and NOT about all the other thing I/me/MZ does to make it what I need, rely on, and ultimately call the Pipe Dream Set.
Oh, the video will be posted here, YouTube and my website and it will be free for the viewing public!
MZ Thank you Sir!!

Anyone use this set for foxes? How would you adjust this set back distance from the pipe for the smaller animal? Don't have many coyotes in my area yet and there have only been four killed or trapped in the past six years or so. I know a guy that caught over 300 reds last year on pipes.......and yes, I'd say you probably would be a little closer to the pipe if no coyotes. Screen color? I like black.....because I put such little cover on the screen.....and some of the black shows through but blends in better, I think, than silver. That said.....if that's all you have use it! MZ

Another pipe dream victim. This girl was out in the snow last night and found a pipe dream set I made 15 days ago. The weather has been wet and nasty. I had not touched this set at all from day one. We got a little snow overnight like a lot of you did.

I made 4 pipe dream sets 10-days ago on some grassy waterways where I’ve taken coyotes in the past. I’m using John Graham lures designed for the old M-44 grab and pull set up. Two were MB550s with grey aluminum screen and two were Montana #3 with black screen I got from Marty Smith-Keg Creek Lures. In a couple nights I took 3 reds and had one pull out.
With smaller (bamboo) pipes I’ve seem where the tops have been extremely chewed. Grey conduit holds up better. I’m using bait with the conduits and have taken coyotes and coon with it.
We had 2-inches of rain just before I set. And 1/2 inch after I set. I’m not a fan of bringing in dry dirt but bringing a small bag of dry grass is easy. This set (finally) connected for me and I’ll use it heavily in the future too
Never too old to learn

I even bed some of my 1 1/2 dukes for coon this way using my 3 inch auger for the hole. Goes real quick J

Zagman is a thinker and that's why he nails coyote after coyote on their terms where they choose to live. He can catch them in his home state, your home state or my home state. Why? Because he understands the doggies, what they want, and when they want it. I've used the pipe dream set and it's fun. Real fun sometimes when the traditional sets are blown over with snow and a yote is dancing in a circle of mud, and ice with a piece of pipe nearby!
I just got a call asking me to come a try to catch a coyote on a fenced ranch here NW of Houston that's killed > $100,000 of exotics in the last two years. 7 trappers have come and tried "everything" they told me. Everything. It's a male they tell me. Nobody can trap, snare, shoot, call, dog chase "him" they tell me. For two years they've tried all they can do, and still about once a week, they find a dead or injured critter that Mr. Coyote has worked over hard.
Now it'll be my turn come mid-November. I gave them a hefty daily fee I charge. They gulped and said "OK, we just need you to catch this thing!!" I think I'll bring some piping and a bit of Widowmaker paste bait.
Zag, wish me luck on this dog pressured for two years by government and private trappers, helicopters, dog guys, and night vision callers! Go pipe dream go.

I will indeed. And if Zagman's pipe dream does the deal rather than another set... I'll skin his coyotes for a year! Not.

That dog has a masters degree in survival, please let us know how it goes. Well, day 7 has lapsed and only two bobcats for the week thus far. Mr. Coyote is proving to be a Boone & Crockett. He's not moving much at all so far, here inside the 600 or so high fenced acres. Between myself and the hired hand, we've only cut a couple tracks twice. Ouch. No turds either as the buzzards eat them and the dung beetles are still out in force. But I'm a patient trapper and an optimist! I did learn trapper #7 has been coming out every two weeks for some months, setting traps and then the hired man checks them. The trapper resets each time he comes. Currently there are numerous traps laying snapped and visible here and there on the ranch. I set a few more set today, real sneaky like, and we'll see what tomorrow brings. So far, Zagman still has to skin his own yotes.

So with the pipe dream bedding system is there any dirt under the jaws at all? Just on the very edges to support the jaws and levers you will have the big hole under the middle of the trap . I use #2 duke and dogless bridgers I dig a hole about 5x5x5 then take my hammer and tap down the edges for the jaws and lever so the trap will be just a little below ground level. If there is any wobble I'll tap around the outside edge to pinch the dirt in just a little on the trap. Go to Zags Coyote U site he has his write up on the pipe dream that will explain way better then me J

I tried some folded over aluminium screen today. Used a cutout of 1/2 inch plywood to form it. Not happy at all. I got to get the screen figured out. Was not sitting well at all on my MB 650.

Has anybody tried different color pipe? Blue orange red white grey? The pipe is an invisible weatherproof bait holder. If you’re making the set as instructed, pound the pipe into a clump of grass till only a couple inches are out of the ground. Should be virtually invisible unless you’re standing right on top of it

I tried some folded over aluminium screen today. Used a cutout of 1/2 inch plywood to form it. Not happy at all. I got to get the screen figured out. Was not sitting well at all on my MB 650. I’ve only used the heavy duty black screen so I can’t speak for the aluminum stuff, I fold mine in half like I’m going to make a paper airplane but don’t crease it flat, just a slight pre bend so that the screen is hitting on the middle of the pan and slightly up on the edges of the pan. Then all 4 corners are tucked under the jaws. I cut a 4”x4” hole in the ground then pound out some ledges for the jaws to rest on, and pound two spots for the levers. Then I set my trap beyond the night latch, and put my fingers under the pan to keep it from firing, and beat on the jaw posts, the levers and the jaws to bed it into the ground. I raise the loose jaw, set the pan to the night latch, slide my pre bent screen into place, lower the loose jaw and beat all the earth around the outside of the jaws to lock it all in. Zagger could probably give a way better explanation, but that’s the best advice I can give.

Thanks! Where do you buy your black screen? The only black screen at Home Depot was really flimsy.

No BS, O’Gorman, Keg Creek all sell it. I know I bought 5 dozen from Kendal at the Iowa convention for something like $40 this past summer. Not sure about prices from the other guys

I gotcha, so you are sliding the pan through the two slits. That's pretty slick, thanks, I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks

Try this. Norm Mullins showed me this and it works great to keep the grass flat. Cut your wire to fit inside our jaws. Cut two slits in the wire and slip it onto the pan. Lays flat. Looks like this. Pretty slick, might save some foul language when the screen moves around when covering.
Wish I had more time to trap....

I heard about this before and I started doing this to take the "bubble" out this year. Way, way better!!! I hadn't see a picture, but that is exactly how mine look over the pan. I still cut mine long enough to fit under both jaws I guess.

Let water pass through to help prevent freeze up. Wax paper will we water in grass and it can foul the trap.
