I am 62 years old... almost 63 and have been a outdoors man all my life... literally. I have been trapping since my dad and I made some old wooden rabbit traps on the farmhouse porch during a snow storm when I was about 5 or 6. I have seen just about all the furbearers we have here in SE Nebr.... from moles and gophers... rats and mice... to all that we trap as trappers. BUT I have never seen a weasel. Never. Till today. I was mowing my grader ditch and was on the last strip of grass about 8" wide. Grass was fairly tall.... probably about 10" or so. With just a foot or less..... maybe just inches... left to mow..... out pops a brown weasel and takes off over the cut grass for the cover of taller uncut grass. I was a hollering with joy!!!! Finally seen one. Seen Tracks in the snow before. And have been trying to catch one most all my trapping life. I have had farmers and others give me dead ones their cat killed or what the farmers killed when moving wood or rock piles. Maybe my luck is changing and this will be the year to catch one!! I can only hope!!

If you have an old wood pile, sash pile, old juck gathered someplace on your property would be a good lace for them to live. Look for scat like this and then set near by.

Do your weasels turn white in winter that far south? Haven't seen one in a while but won't be long before they are white here.

Ive seen an ermine in full white phase three times , twice in N Idaho, once here.

Two of those times it was late fall with no snow on the valley floor. The one sighting a few yards away reminded me of a white sock as it leaped along the ground

The other time I was riding a very hyped Arab/Morgan horse up a mountain trail and saw it above my head, peering down at me from rocks above the trail. It followed me for several yards as I rode , popping out in full sun to watch me as it jumped from boulder to boulder. It shone white in the sun, easy to see with no snow .

I talked to Sam Wilson (G & P furbearer biologist) a couple years back. He said southern Nebraska probably does not have as good as population as the northern half the state. He also said those that are here probably do not turn totally white like the northern ones do. Hope I find out. If only I could catch a weasel or two, I could die a happy man!!

I've caught 2 through the years. They were all white except the tip of tail was black. I think I have seen 2 live ones and I'm 59.

I fought a cat for this one a few years ago! LOL

Last year while sitting in my pop up blind hunting deer, a white weasel came by with a mouse in his mouth. He got more meat than I did that day.

I had a friend say he killed some in a basement of a construction site he was working at in Albion, NE within the last 5 years. He said they were white. Also had a student tell me he has seen a white one with a black tail at his house before too and a cat found one once near Chambers, NE. I have boxes made this year and I am finally going to try my hand at it.
