We were away this weekend.....and a killing frost showed up and wilted my last 3 mater plants. Still have some maters on them....some kinda red and some green. So.....are those maters still good..if I pick them and put them in the window to ripen ? Thanks

Depends on how hard a frost it was. A light frost and they are probably ok, a hard frost and they won't be.

What Sundance said, Nessie Im not far from you we got the frost also. I went through the tomatoes today and picked some . We have about a 100 plants . I found some with frost damage but most are all right. Just pick them any damaged ones will develop soft spots in a few days, just toss those the rest will be fine.

When that happened to us we pulled the plant up by the roots and hung them upside down in the cellar, they ripened up nice.

Yea the frost got mine too, the protected ones are OK the ones right in the wide open froze. Out of about 100 plants, I have probably 15 left. We already canned enough and I have over a bushel of ripe ones inside now. Garden is about done for this year.

Wrap in newspaper, and place in cool dark place. If newspaper is wet you know you have a bad 1.

Here's recipe from PA.

Mix up an egg an milk an salt an pepper to taste.
Slice green or very firm red maters 1/2 thick. Pitch ends.
Dredge slices in milk/egg mixture an roll in flour and/or bread crumbs.
Then fry in 1/2" oil in fry pan till golden brown.
Lay on plate with paper towel.

Nessy !

Finally here smile

Here's another one also to try...these mixes are flexible just like sketti sauce .

Instead of the bread crumbs , I like to crumble up buttah crackers . Tollhouse are among my favourites.

And use buttah in a skillet to brown instead of deep frying. Just as I do hush puppies. You have to turn them with care , though , if not deep frying.

There's options and thats good when you are in the field or elsewhere and need to be flexible .

This youtube is a good one and I like the dippin sauce bettah , too !

Wait... what? Never had fried green tomatoes!?

Down here the hospitals send them home with you when you're born.
