Usually around here it is skunks that do that.

My guess is the same as most.....skunk.
How about this one...I had a good sized Bald Faced Hornet nest in a maple in my back yard. It was about 81/2 feet off the ground and near the end of a long whippy limb. Sometime in the last week something tore it all to pieces and ate all the eggs/larvae. That would be one mighty tall skunk!
