Anyone use coon and squirrel tails for tying jigs? What's your method of preserving and removal from the tail?

I do. I actually buy them. Cut the tail of at the butt and borax the fleshy part and let it sit straight for a month to dry. Do NOT freeze.

I just take the bone out, pin it open on cardboard, and cover with borax. I never used 'coon tails, but squirrel is used on some flies I tie.

Do you just cut the hair off close as you can to the hyde? Do you have a preferred method for dying them?

+3 on scrape & borax.
Squirrel, rabbit, groundhog and any game bird were always in demand among local fly tiers. Scraps from deer and beaver too.

Any place away from flies. Somewhere why it stays fairly dry. Maybe a closet.

My fur buyer, buy the Squirrel and wood chuck skins with the tail on.For the Squirrel, just put them up like mink, but the hind feet on the belly side.I use the mink boards and for the woodchuck you keep the bone in the tail but it split to the tip with the skin spread and put borax in it and put up like coyote on coon boards.
