So I’ve got a question for those of you that wear gloves to set canine traps. When you get a new pair of gloves, how to you decontaminate them? I’m thinking that a new pair of gloves is gonna have any number of foreign smells on them from the factory and packaging process and to do nothing to them before using them would defeat the purpose unless the purpose is simply hand protection. Anyone care to chime in?
Before this turns into a debate on wether or not to wear them let me shut that right down, just got done reading that 4 page thread in the archives. I just wanna know about cleaning/treating new gloves.

I wear disposable nitrile gloves under cotton brown jersey gloves. Rub them with dirt and pine needles before using. If you wanted to get crazy you could wash in baking soda. I wear the nitrile under to protect against sweat. Then when I take off the cotton gloves I'm already wearing my lure gloves

No need for gloves in my opinion , unless it to keep you hands from freezing.

Whatever the local flora pine/spruce or sage brush. Grab a handful and twist it good with gloves on. Couple of times all I can smell is pine or sage. The yotes can probably still smell the leather just not as much. Fox I don’t worry about as they are dumber than a box of rocks.

I wear what Law dog does. I always rub a coon down with them. It’s more of a superstition thing not sure it helps on the yotes, but it makes me feel better.
The most important thing for me is to keep them separate from my lure and bait gloves, and not let them get contaminated with bait or lure.

The only reason I wear gloves is because I can’t keep from getting lure on my hands and thus would end up on my traps
As far as new gloves I just use them myself I don’t do anything special

I apply bait and lure with a butter knife and seldom get any on me , but urine when I close the flip tops sometimes get on my hands. I have also set all the traps a stop is getting first and then I go back and bait and lure them. I do this for record keeping not scent control.

Gloves to set traps, bare hands to bait and lure. Keep a pack of unscented baby wipes in the truck to wipe off excess stank on my hands a few times through the trip. Never done anything to prepare new gloves other than use them. Ive set traps plenty of times and had sweat drip off my head right onto the trap bed and have a coyote the next day. You wont ever get in and out of a set without a k9 able to smell you were there so dont go too far out of your way, just make sure to use something down the hole they want more than they care about you walking around. However a trap contaminated with bait or lure will probably get dug up.
Our coyotes live side by side with people. Scent control might mean alot more in more wilderness areas. But for me its never been an issue. Lots of the landowners call me cause the coyotes are in their backyard in the daylight stealing dog and cat food or eyeballing the dog or cat.

I wash mine in scent free detergent and hang them out to air dry on the back fence. Wear them a day setting and than they go to be lure gloves. Then threw them away at end of day. I like black bead palm gloves. I think lure and bait are the biggest contaminants in my trapping so i keep separate gloves. Just how i do it.

One clean set for new sets, another set for handling critters and remakes, and brown jerseys for handling bait and lure.
