I have a buddy that inherited a gun that I have never seen before. It's a H&R .22lr with a old Weaver scope on it. The only thing we think we know about it is, it was used for training in WW11? Can anyone tell us about it, thanks!

i believe its a reising. probably a national match rifle rather than a military trainer. that ebony fore end, if original, is very rare

Danny, it does say Reising on the clip. It also has a compass on the stock.

It is a “Leatherneck “ military training rifle that has been heavily sporterized. The bolt handle is sunk into the fore end and had a reciever sight and was not drilled and tapped for a scope. They were designed as a trainer for the Garand. I have had mine since 1990.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I forgot to get a pic of the butt stock, it has the hole and lid that holds a cleaning kit??? I think. It's missing.

They were designed as a trainer for the Reising Submachine gun. The bolt under the fore end is in the same place as the Reising SMG. Another oddity is how it shoots. The bolt is very heavy, as is the return spring. This was done to give the new shooter the "feel" of the action of the Reisng SMG.
In practice, the gun feels like it wants to come off your shoulder when you fire it. I had one and could not hit jack with it. Interesting history nonetheless.
Were newbies given this rifle as a trainer for the Garand as well? Could be. They needed to be trained with something.

Thanks for that link danny. Looks like his might be a hybrid of sorts. It's got the clip and looks like the 65, but sporterized and a scope with the front sight left on.
