Below is a link that shows the county forest land in Lincoln County WI, which is the county north or Marathon or where Wausau is located. This would be closer if you are just west of Wausau. I have never hunted these woods so I don't know the quality of the habitat. Taylor County north of Medford has about about 200K of national forest and county forest with good grouse habitat but you are looking at an hour drive or more instead of 20-30 minutes. We are up near Park Falls now hunting. 5 of us have only killed 5 in 2 days. Numbers seem to be way down this year. Jumping most birds around transition areas between poppies patches and big woods.

I hunted a bit Friday and Saturday last week. Weather wasn't good, but I managed to knock down one out of 6 I flushed. Here's a site that shows younger forest growth that's likely to hold grouse and woodcock. FFLIGHT

We hunt in two groups. Averaging about 13-14 a day. Normally I shoot the woods down. I've only pop shot at a few. Way down from last year, but still fun. Birds aren't that wild either. Having some good dog work.

Not wild being they're holding good and not flying way ahead of the dogs. Jumped about 30 today in the rain. The 5 of us got 5. Several bunches of 4 birds. I should of killed 2-3 more. Needless to say I could use some shooting practice!!!!
