I have to go to Wausau the end of the mouth, and will have some free time in the afternoons. Is their any place close that maybe hold a bird or two. I know any place close to town gets a lot of pressure. I will be West of town. Any help would be great

Below is a link that shows the county forest land in Lincoln County WI, which is the county north or Marathon or where Wausau is located. This would be closer if you are just west of Wausau. I have never hunted these woods so I don't know the quality of the habitat.
Taylor County north of Medford has about about 200K of national forest and county forest with good grouse habitat but you are looking at an hour drive or more instead of 20-30 minutes.

I grew up in Wausau back in the 60's through the early 80's. Hunted grouse a lot in the Nine Mile recreational area which is southwest of Wausau within 10 miles. Miles of trails and habitat to hold grouse and woodcock. Bring handheld GPS or at the very least a compass as there is a huge tag alder swamp component that can get you turned around mighty quick! Ask me how I know! grin

We are up near Park Falls now hunting. 5 of us have only killed 5 in 2 days. Numbers seem to be way down this year. Jumping most birds around transition areas between poppies patches and big woods.

How many flushes a day for your group of 5?

I hunted a bit Friday and Saturday last week. Weather wasn't good, but I managed to knock down one out of 6 I flushed.

Here's a site that shows younger forest growth that's likely to hold grouse and woodcock.

We hunt in two groups. Averaging about 13-14 a day. Normally I shoot the woods down. I've only pop shot at a few. Way down from last year, but still fun. Birds aren't that wild either. Having some good dog work.

You are probably on a lot of young of the year birds. There are a ton out there this year. I have seen 2 set of third brood birds the past few weeks. Can't even fly yet. That what I think of when you say they aren't that wild

Not wild being they're holding good and not flying way ahead of the dogs. Jumped about 30 today in the rain. The 5 of us got 5. Several bunches of 4 birds. I should of killed 2-3 more. Needless to say I could use some shooting practice!!!!
