A friend gave me venison yesterday.

He put it in a "scented" trash bag by accident.

Some of the meat tasted like soap.

I don't want to throw it all away.

Question: Has anyone experienced this before and did this hurt them at all? Thanks

Garbage should smell of garbage not lavender, I would not be able to eat anything that had been in the scented bag.

I would try to wash it off with cold water. Maybe use a rag to gently scrub.

I made the same mistake once. Lesson ill never forget. Everything tasted horrible. Not all the onion soup mix in the world could save it.

Give it back to him and make him throw it out. Some states are touchy with wasting game.

You might be able to filet off the outside of the pieces which came in contact with the bag. I doubt that the scent worked its way very deep.

I would try washing it down with a strong mix of vinegar and water, then try it.

I would not eat it a lot of those types of trash bags have also been treated with disinfectant and or bug dope of repellents To prevent against bugs and other small vermin and germs

Had this happen with some bear meat. We trimmed a thin outside layer of the meat off and it was fine.

Thanks for bringing this up. I had never thought about it so thanks for saving me the embarrassment of giving someone "flavored" meat. My wife does get the scented bags.

Not here. I said some states, and I don't know the rules for NY. But we use the scented trash bags, and I wouldn't want to eat anything that was in one. So rather than suggest something that might get OP in trouble, I suggested he give it back to the guy who made the mistake of putting it in the scented bag and let him deal with it. Just in case there are laws against it where he lives, in the off chance someone who knows him is monitoring this thread. You never know who's watching.

I wouldn't want to eat it , besides the taste knew a guy who worked at a place that made scented wipes and such. the scent came in 55 gallon drums and was hazardous material in it's concentrated form they had to have containment to keep it from getting in a floor drain and into the city sewer.

if you buy a 100 they are less than a quarter each.

You can salvage meat that's been "lost" in the woods for a few days and gotten a little gamy by rubbing it down with baking soda and washing off.
