Yes, cable is much harder to cut. Bolt cutter will not cut cable. The problem now is they make battery powered side grinders.

Some boards buried with nails sticking up on your property side of the gate. You can remove them when you are coming and going. At least you know whatever they get they will carry off and not drive off with it.

Any electrical source nearby you can tap into? Bzzzzzzzzz!!! That may or may not be the idea of which I decided to keep to myself.

We've used trail cameras as security cameras. Make sure they are the no glow type and put them above the normal vision line. I hide them in the crock of a tree about 15' up. But, trail cameras won't capture a license plate unless they're placed in a much too obvious place.
Around here, we've had trail camera photos and video of no-gooders posted on facebook on hunting pages. Enough local hunters see the photos that eventually somebody turns them in. Be careful what you do in the woods today.

I have a couple security camera myself. What I think does a great job is signs saying you have cameras. You need a few of them placed around your place. Eyes in the sky will change the minds of many.

Any electrical source nearby you can tap into? Bzzzzzzzzz!!! That may or may not be the idea of which I decided to keep to myself. A solar powered electric fence attached to the gate will probably work wonders and not kill anyone.
