Other than a camera (done), anyone know anything that may keep them from doing it again other than bigger chain? Is heavy cable harder to cut than chain?

Yes, cable is much harder to cut. Bolt cutter will not cut cable. The problem now is they make battery powered side grinders.

Some boards buried with nails sticking up on your property side of the gate. You can remove them when you are coming and going. At least you know whatever they get they will carry off and not drive off with it.

Make their target less attractive. Keep anything of value out of site and dont make them think anything of value is there if possible. Also make the property look like someone keeps it up if it doesnt or at least regularly and infrequently visited.

put a dummy camera where they can see it ,old one from yard sale ,what I use an hide a couple of good ones works great they normally, take or shoot dummy camera

We've used trail cameras as security cameras. Make sure they are the no glow type and put them above the normal vision line. I hide them in the crock of a tree about 15' up. But, trail cameras won't capture a license plate unless they're placed in a much too obvious place.

Around here, we've had trail camera photos and video of no-gooders posted on facebook on hunting pages. Enough local hunters see the photos that eventually somebody turns them in. Be careful what you do in the woods today.

Figure out who it is, then ask them to keep an eye on the place. Works every time.

I have a couple security camera myself. What I think does a great job is signs saying you have cameras. You need a few of them placed around your place. Eyes in the sky will change the minds of many.

Lose the chain and make a bolt cutter proof gate. Lock located inside a piece of pipe. Gas company gates are often set up this way. Cameras from 3 directions and hidden. When the culprits are identified, swift action should follow.
