Crazy.... Several years ago I read somewhere about a bass fisherman that had a coyote jump into the water to grab a topwater bass lure. Seems they had a photo of it beside the boat with a popper stuck in its lip.

I nearly caught a fox pup while bass fishing on Gaston Lake in N.C. I saw the young fox on the shore near the waters edge. I threw a 9 inch plastic worm within a few inches of the bank. The pup watched it, wanted it, but would not enter the water. I then threw the plastic worm into a small bush and shook the bush, as the fox took interest. Finally I tossed the worm onto the bare bank. Had to jerk it quickly to avoid catching the fox. I was in a boat 20 feet from the bank and the fox never noticed me. This was in the 1970s.

Flathead lake is quite big and would be difficult for most critters to cross, but I think that animals swim more than we think. I don't have the experience with bobcats, but I have seen pictures of lynx going after birds in the water, have also seen pictures of them crossing the river here (about 200 yards across on average). I also have a map of a lynx that was collared and crossed back and forth over the river many times during the summer months when the river is not frozen.
