I have it and its something not to mess with.

It can lead to Barrett's Esophagus. I have it. The acid will erode the lining in your throat. It can also lead to cancer!

I take Omeprazole for it. Its OTC stuff.

If I were you I'd go see the doc!

WISH I HAD MORE TIME TO TRAP!

I was diagnosed over 15 years ago and ever since have been on Nexium and then Omeprazole, both prescription strength. They work to reduce stomach acid. The reflux condition still exists but no longer erodes your esophagus. Your stomach lining is a special acid resistant tissue, your esophagus is not and can be damaged when your lower esophageal sphincter fails to prevent reflux. Your body reacts by growing new acid resistant tissue in the esophagus, a condition called Barrett's Esophagus. As you might imagine, things can go wrong when you start growing new and different tissue as a mature adult (cancer), so it's best to avoid that situation. Reducing the amount of stomach acid produced via a daily pill does the trick with no adverse affects for most people.

took omeprazol for years , the real answer for me was controlling sugar intake and loosing 20 pounds loosing more would probably be better.

if I keep sugar down then I don't suffer the reflux

eating too late at night even if it is low sugar is also bad for me

it was bad for me , they scoped me 3-4 times checking my esophagus over the years

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Keep a food log and figure out what affects it. It can be different triggers for different people. Once I figured out what was aggravating mine I stopped all caffeine and drinks containing tannic acid, cola, tea and coffee. After 3 months of that I don't even need medicine now. Go see the doctor, nothing to mess with. I've buried two friends from esophageal cancer.

Have known that i had it for 10-12 years but have had it for much longer. Also used to get gastritis as a result of it. Dr said on a scale of 1-10 mine was a 7-8 so surgery was recommended. Was on prescription Nexium, omeperazole, and ranitidine for a couple years. Had surgery (Oral Incisionless Fundoplication) about 10 years ago. Surgery unfortunately did not work for me as i still deal with it on a daily basis. Tagamet is the one OTC med i’ve found that really helps me. Prescription Nexium also helped tremendously. What i’ve found is that i need to watch my intake of tomato based products, breads, pastas, bananas, and a few other foods. The best thing i can do to help is not over eat. Find out what foods make it worse and limit or avoid them and dont over eat.

Doctoring for about 12yrs now along with a hyatial hernia also. Taking 40mg prilosec (omeprezole is generic) every other day to control. Don't eat 3 hrs b4 bedtime now either or will suffer from acid reflux and thats not very tasty especially coming out yr nose too. I have Barretts also. Had what I thought was bad heartburn that got so bad drinking water would burn. Couldn't eat enough antacids!!! Pretty well under control now. Past heavy drinking probably didn't help. This gettin old sucks! Treat your body like u need it for 100 yrs not 50!!!

Omeprazole also controls mine. If a person has larger gut than he or she should, losing weight may help. Doc told me fat in the stomach competes with stomach acid for space.

I also have Barrett's esophagus. As stated, nothing to mess with.
I am on Texts (pantoprazole) due to peptic ulcer.

I honestly believe that if I dropped 20 lbs it would go away entirely but the combination of high stress job and busy life (and lack of willpower lol) make that tough

Just happy to be here.

Raised the head of my bed up, try not to eat food or drink any liquids for a couple hours before bed. I have took all the over counter stuff for years with no lasting relief. I don't eat in public because I can't swallow everything and when I get choked it ain't pretty. My mom and 3 sisters all had their gallbladder taken out and their throats stretched. I took and occasionally still take milk thistle for liver and gallbladder, seems to help. And much to the doctors dislike I take 1/4 spoon of baking soda directly into mouth and wash down a few minutes later. If one takes too much it can get in your guts and expand them if the gas can't get out to the point of causing damage. I was taking baking soda trying to get my PSA down. Don't think it helped for that but did wonders for the gerd. A lot of people seem to think a high acid content in the body creates a haven for cancer of all kinds. Back when I was taking a lot of baking soda I used urine test strips and tried to keep my ph at 6.6. Actually ideal is 7 to 7.2 but using urine test strips something about protein makes ideal at about 6.6.. Who knows what works? I'm still alive and may die of old age someday, lol.

At my peak psyllium really helped a lot also. Too many or even just one soft drink with high acid would set me off.

I have been taking it for 5 years. Before that I had a burning in my throat 24/7 and had trouble swallowing at times. As others have said not eating for a couple hours before bed helps too.
