When I was a little kid, my grandparents had a grass growing around their yard that kinda looked like that grass in your pic. Really was fine bladed. Never grew very tall. Usually stayed a green color even during severe drought. They had the old style push mower where when you pushed it the twisted blades spun really fast. But when you hit this stuff it all but stopped the mower cold. Even the engine driven mowers they got later in the years would really pull down almost to a stall if you didn't crawl through it. They called it Buffalo grass. I don't really know the proper name.

Looks like Buffalo grass to me. You can't kill it will survive any drought there is. One light rain and it greens up like you have watered it for months. A very course fine blade grass that is resistant to just about everything.

Nebracatman, those mowers are called reel mowers. I still use one where the grass doesn't grow thick.

Looks like "Curly Glade Grass", but it's kinda hard to tell from the pic. AKA: Buffalo Grass".

Buffalo grass will get about 5 to 8" high and lays over. Like some have said, if you replace that grass you may not get a grass to grow and survive if the ground isn't the best ground. If you start replacing it you will start getting weeds and then it can be a mess. Just wanted to add that even though you know that already.

All I remember is Grandpa or Grandma hollering "you dang kids, leave that alone before you cut your fingers off" then in a few years after I grew up they MADE me use it to mow their grass as they got older !

I would have guessed buffalo as well, but it could be some other short grass, that does well in arid conditions. Why would you want to kill a plant that prevents weeds, thrives on sandy lower quality soils and does not need to be mowed or tended to? Also if it is a short grass prairie type grass it holds good energy into the winter and provides feed through the snow. Now that may not be when you want to hunt but then the land is yours to manage as you choose.
Bryce I don't want to kill it. My post was to try to figure out what this grass is so I can go to my other property and plant some of it. It's great stuff. I sure wouldn't want to kill it. In fact I'd recommend it to others.
