Lets say a person traps an animal this time of year in the morning, but doesn't skin it until after work. During the day, it's possible flies or other insects could find the carcass. Does that pose a risk for damage?

If you still have active flies, they definitely can cause pelt damage. You might not notice the damage until the tanning process. If they lay eggs on the fur, those eggs will swell up during the tanning process and they are held in place by a super glue type adhesive when they are layed. They are hard to impossible to comb out without damage to the fur or guard hair.

My taxidermist recommends early season deer capes be put in burlap bags ASAP to keep flies from laying eggs on them.
