I have a Garmin legend GPS and it died today while I was hunting in the Adirondack mountains. I knew where I was and used my compass to get out with. I was wondering if anyone has a garmin erred 30x and what do you like and dislike about it.

I never, ever, rely on electronics. Use them as an aid but always have a backup.

Yep..The bunch I was with late summer never even new what canyons/range/road number they were on..All they had was electronics..one of them even had a little solar panel charger..It took me forever to figure out how to change the language on my GPS to match theirs..It sure would have been simpler to just say "On the north side of such and such peak"...Oh no it was all passed to me in some kind of format..LOL..As they didn't even know what the peaks name was....LOL

I carry my GPS on occasions but I never leave it on. I waypoint the truck or camp then turn it off to save battery. I don't need to have it follow every foot step I take. If there is something I need to mark then I turn it on and waypoint it then off again. If I'm lost then I can turn back on and have it go to where I waypointed the truck.

I have never run out of battery every, but I have a quick charge battery unit to charge if for some reason it goes bad. I also carry a few new battery's with me at all times. If mine runs out it will save all points marked to the time it runs out of battery.

A compass never quits. But orienteering by compass is a dying art.

I have never carried a compass or gps. I have used onx hunt on my smartphone to identify property lines but that’s it. I have always had a very good sense of direction and distance, which I attribute to many days and nights in the Nevada mountains as a kid. I’ve never been in a place where I wasn’t sure which direction my destination was, even in mountain ranges I’ve never been to.

I wasn’t born with the skill, it was learned and practiced my entire life. Everyone who does anything in remote areas needs to practice going without technology, because it fails. Navigate by the sun and stars. It’s surprising how many people can’t find the North Star

Been on several Western coyote hunting trips where a snow squall/ fog bank moved in while miles from the truck.
A compass could have helped in those situations.

I always carry a deck of cards in the woods. If ya get lost, set down and play a game of solitaire. Sooner or later someone will come along and tell you how to play.

Yep..When I was a kid..I had shot a elk..I followed the elk in a 6 inch snow on the ground..As the day went on the weather got worse...I had been tracking through spruce and parks and aspen groves..I pushed..In the same afternoon I was brushing new fallen snow off the track to make sure I was on the same blood trail..well the snow had finally covered the bull track to the point it was dimples in the new snow..I was wet with sweat and finally stopped..I looked around and the clouds were thick in the aspens..the snow still falling and everything looked the same. In fact it was hard to tell up from down..and eerie quite..I pulled out that same compass and started heading back.my back tracks were filled with new snow.with nothing to go by but the compass in my hand..I walked and walked..and nothing every seemed right..finally I made it to a forest road..but then where was I..Some guys in a old willy's jeep came along and stopped..and gave me a ride back to camp..

We were very lucky one time and fog rolled in on us. We had compass and got out with Gods help. It was very scary deal. Fog is nothing to mess with when in the backcountry, it can be a killer.

Yep..Will Those GPS's work Snowy in the conditions we have been in?..I'm inclined to think not as they would have trouble locating through timber or even in a park with dense fog..I'm not willing to find out..LOL

When walking in the woods I always strap on my cammenga wrist compass, keep one in my bino harness so I do not forget it. It is a small dial compass on a wrist strap, they are fairly inexpensive and very handy. New to me big woods areas I would try to have a topo map also. I use an old gamin Dakota 20 to keep waypoints for later use and to log the track/miles walked but have never looked at it for where I am or directions, have looked at the phone map sat picture for my position from time to time for orientation/convenience. Always have a spare normal style compass in my pack.

Yes guys I always have a compass and have used them all my life hunting big woods maine, Adirondack,New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I carry extra batteries, flint and steel, space blankets and more. The GPS died and no longer even turns on. I also don’t leave it on when hunting unless using it to navigate to a spot I haven’t been to. All I was asking for was info on the garmin erred 30x. This is not my first rodeo.

I have a gps but never bother to take it with me. I don't trust it because I KNOW for a fact it is wrong. Besides...........electronic equipment only fails when it is turned on.

Stick with the map & compass !

I did not think it was your first rodeo, my comments were based on the topic gps died. Many people do rely on electronics only today thou..I did not mean to imply that you did.
