I teach firearm safety.
When my granddaughter turned 12, her mother told her she needed to take firearm training since there were guns in the house that were her dad's.

She said she didn't want to take the class because she had no intention of ever going near a gun anyway.

I told her if she took the class, I would have a nice surprise for her.

We do the class twice a year. Each class is 3 weeks, two nights a week. The third week is an extra day for live firing range day.

After shooting on range day, my granddaughter never realized shooting could be so much fun, her own words.

My surprise for her was a Henry Golden Boy 22LR that I had won and was still new in the box.

Her uncle has a shooting range. She spent a lot of time shooting her newly acquired rifle.

She told her dad she would like to come with him in his hunting blind that season. She watched him shoot a deer and said she would like to try next year. Her dad had a friend who had a 243 bolt the next year. She ended up shooting a spike buck and a real nice doe.

She said this year she didn't want to shoot a doe and was waiting for a nice buck. I bought her a 243 Savage Axis II, the one with the Accu-trigger. They had a special hunt this past weekend for kids who are 17 or less. She's now 14. She sent me a text this past Saturday morning of the 11 point buck she got.

She went from a girl who wanted nothing to do with guns to a girl who couldn't imagine not owning a gun!

Great job. My friend is just going through the same thing with his 12 year old son. He finished hunter safety course and now wants to try hunting this year. Congratulations to and your granddaughter.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Great story and a awesome deer. Almost the same story with my daughter, last year she didnt want anything to do with hunting with a rifle. She would take her bow. This year she decided to give the rifle a try and got her first deer yesterday during our youth gun season. She is 12 and was so excited she cried. I was so proud I teared up my self.

Another nice story. Isn't it neat that so many girls are getting into hunting? This September's firearm class was close to 50% girls.

Nice to hear you got a little misty. I thought I was the only one that happened to.
