I just came back from a week of bear trapping and grouse hunting in northern Maine. Due to the guide I was using not keeping a bait site open like he said he would, I didn't have an active bait site to trap on when I arrived. By the time we started the site back up and bears were back on it, I only had four nights left to trap but wow was it fun. I didn't have my trail cam set correctly so I didn't get the night time pics I needed to see what was happening, but the first night the snare was sprung and I wasn't sure if I just missed a bear, or he rolled a log onto it or what. I had a pic of him in front of the trap, then a moment later he had his head in the bait barrel. The next night the snare didn't fire because I forgot to take the safety off (I'm a rookie, give me a break) and the last night it looked like a bear had been briefly held but slipped out (I have the stop set a little bigger than what's legally required). The trail cam video from the last night lead me to believe it was a sow and two older cubs on the bait so I pulled the trap and headed home a day early.

I didn't get to catch a bear this year but I'm hooked. What a great routine, start the day with the excitement of checking a trap first thing in the morning and then spend the rest of the day wondering the big woods with the dog looking for partridge. I'm already counting down the days till next year.

You're not using the same guide are you???

Can you only run 1 snare?

Congratulations on a successful trip many times I've experienced a similar fate by not collecting a animal but the chase made the trip very enjoyable for me and as you explained it steals your thoughts away until you get to go try again.

Pfft. I had/have nothing but females and cubs on my snare baits.

Was hoping for a big male, so I held off settin. Three locations, three sets of momma and cubs. Bah!

I won't tell you what he charged me. D- is about right. But I may have to use him again, this time with clearer expectations. He was the only guide I found in that particular area that was willing to keep a site open into bird season. Most bear guys are done baiting at the end of September (when bear hunting over bait season ends) and don't want to deal with it any longer after that for just one guy to come set a trap.

Yup, just one. It was two up until a couple years ago I believe. Pretty lame. You're allowed two bears, one by trap and one by hunting, so I don't know why they wouldn't allow you to take two by trap. Like most game laws, they often don't make a lot of sense.

I still think it's a shame that Maine gave up the bear trap. I used to want to go up there and do that, then of course the government had to step in and screw that up.

Check this out:

Its not exactly the same as a big old steel foothold but its still kind of cool. If you want to do it you should try sooner rather than later. More and more people from Massachusetts are moving to Maine and ruining its culture. Bear snaring won't be legal forever.
