There was a lot of rasping in the beginning. Then I used a cabinet scraper to get rid of the rasp marks, then steel wool.
A lot less work than getting a good finish on a flintlock stock.
I probably spent the most time getting the inside of the big end nice and smooth and thinned out to fit the plug in well. Never worked a buffalo horn myself... Just heard a lot of guys say it's hard to get rid of the haze from tooling. Mike

I made a powder horn a year or two ago and it turned out ok... I was getting geared up to make more and my lathe died on me. So things went by the wayside... But my wife surprised me with a new lathe a few weeks ago so when I get some time I'll try it again.
You did a really nice job on that horn.

Finished up a new powder horn for myself. I picked up a raw buffalo horn over the winter. A few nights of cutting, rasping, filing and scraping, and I think it turned out pretty decent. The plugs are made from butternut. I made the staple from an old trap chain ring. Measures 15 3/4 inches along the outside of the curve, 3 3/4 inches across the base. Should hold well over a pound of powder. Now to decide if I make a leather strap or a finger woven one. Thats beautiful. Do have to do maintenance once you start using it? So cool.

As for "maintenance" there really isn't much to do. The main thing you have to watch for is bugs... Carpet beetles (or their larva, can't remember which, maybe both) are notorious for eating holes in horns.
There's probably something you could treat the horn with to protect it from the bugs... But frequent use and handling is about the best thing for keeping bugs away.

Mike Those bugs are the scourge of the earth. They will destroy anything they can get hold of. With as many hides, horns, antlers, furs and feathers as I have (plus my wife's wool fiber addiction) it is a constant state of war in our house to keep the little buggers in control.
