This year, I raised dark throated, silver and red golden pheasants and bobwhite, button and coturnix quail. I usually raise more species and color varieties of pheasants, but cut back on them this year. I sold all my peafowl too.

I also raise guinea fowl, which are technically a gamebird.

I wish I had the space to. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, since I was a little kid

I have Blue Scale, Gambel, and California Valley Quail. About 23 altogether. Hoping to hatch some of their eggs and then sell them as breeding pairs next year.

What do you feed your game birds? Just whatever you can get locally? Or is it a special ration?

Daughter (and dad) raised a dozen pheasants for 4H last year. Was a fun project. We just got commercially available gamebird feed from the feed store. Turned them loose on the property at the end of summer once they were full grown to augment the local population. Seemingly have quite a few of their progeny around this year and the girls enjoy watching them on the driveway. Lost one to cannibalism in the brooder and had a few escapees in the early days of the flight pen, but otherwise were pretty easy keepers.

I raised some bob-white quail and chukar partridge to use for dog training this year. In the past I've raised pheasant as well. They're fun to watch. Little feathered dinosaurs.

I use to work for the IDNR game propagation farm that raised 40,000 pheasants annually for the put and take hunts. Not very smart birds, but with blinders on that could contribute to their stupidity. Had to walk the pens 2x a day to pick up dead bird. Hawks, owls, eagles, and everything else tried like heck to get in and eat them. Hot wire around the base of the pens was a must. I posted a video of 1500 pheasants flushing at one time about 10 years ago, while we were rounding them up. Not a fun experience having 1500 pheasants flying at you at one time.
