The bacteria that breaks down solids in your septic tank don't need additional food, they get plenty! What is far more important than feeding those bacteria is eliminating chemicals that can wipe them out. Many household cleaners, solvents, bleaches and pretty much any chemical introduced into your septic system can kill the bacteria and your system will lose the ability to convert solids into liquids.

Yep, we use to flush a chunk once in awhile. Do you know the science behind it? No, science is often wrong so I listened to the old timer who dug up our tank to clean it.

A group of older farmers that hunted deer near our old camp always said to trap and flush a mouse after pumping the tank to kick start things.
Just happy to be here.

That is where liver belongs anyway. I agree !
It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.

I had a tenant in a six-unit building dumping bacon and/or hamburger grease down the drain. Twice it clogged the main soil line between the basement and septic tank. Both times I had to have the line jetted (very expensive).
The first time I sent an email to all the tenants and described how to properly dispose of cooling grease; wait until it cools, scrape it into a disposable bag or container and throw it in the trash.
The second time I warned them there would be inspections of sink traps if it happened again and the culprit would be evicted. Going on three years with no further problems.
Eh...wot?

when I bought this house the first thing I did was make sure the only lines to the septic tank was from the 2 commodes. every thing else in the house goes to a separate line and it's own leechfield. no problems in 6 years.i figure 4 more years till it needs pumped.its only me and the wife.
