I'm thinking about buying my daughter a 7MM-08 rifle for her B-Day. She's only 5.2" tall and I think the youth model's would fit her nicely. What do you all think about this caliber? And what rifle would you recommend? I'm looking to hopefully stay under $650. Thanks in advance.

Is it for deer?

I’m not a huge rifle guy so I should probably keep my opinion to myself, but have you considered .243

The 7mm-08 is an excellent caliber for kids/woman. It has low recoil and can be loaded to 170 grains. Years ago I bought a Remington mountain rifle for my wife, an excellent rifle.

Absolutely love the 7mm 08! Have never had a deer take another step when hit with a Nosler ballistic tip. All my kids have used it.

I would say she could maybe grow into the 7mm-08 if you get some lighter loads for less felt recoil. And then up the loads as she grows. Or, get her the .243 and then you can buy her a 7mm-08 for her graduation or something, a girl can never have enough guns.

Can you borrow one or a few different rifles for her to try?

Great deer caliber, I’d try to find a tikka t3 compact if you can.

Good deer round. I'm not sure if Savage makes it in their Axis model but but would check it out.

Yes savage has it in axis also in the youth model which I would look at. Loaded with say barnes ttsx it's also a fine moose and elk round. Light recoil and versatile.

Bought my kids one and Remington model 7 great little gun. Have a .243 and a ruger compact .308 kids ended up shooting the .308 the most because of ammo availability. Never a fan of the .243 in kids hands with needing great shot placement at 200 or so yards. The other 2 can push through a little mor muscle and bone if you get into the shoulder. In fact my wife used the .308 to kill her cow last year.
Just my 2 cents

Smart man Turd...smart man. And, she'll still be killing stuff with it 40 years from now.

Bought my wife a youth model 7 in 7mm-08, about 1996. We've lost track of the number of deer she's killed with it. She didn't care for factory loads, so I load 140gr Sierra game king and back them off a little. She's told me I can sell any rifle except her rifle.

Yes it would. If u reload u can load alot different gr bullets . I load for 280 7mm mag . It's me but I like a .284 caliber bullet better than a 244. I have 2 280 rems 280 AI and 7 mm mag.

Look at Thompson Center Venture Compact, you won't regret it.

7mm-08 is what you want and a Tikka or Remington model 7 is what I would look for. Have her shoot the Reduced Recoil or Managed Recoil ammo that is factory loaded by Remington and I believe Hornady.

I have nothing clever to put here.

If I happened upon a nice used Rem-700, Tikka T3, or Win Featherweight in 7mm-08 I would jump on it. Buying new I would seriously consider the latest hot seller, the 6.5 Creedmoor. My opinion, based only on what I have read because I own neither, is that the 7mm-08 is a superb cartridge that is being unfairly overshadowed by the 6.5. Purely for hunting I would pick the 7mm, but if resale was a factor the 6.5 should be considered. On the other hand, with the 7mm resale may never need to be considered.

Have one in Winchester model 70 featherweight. It is a very nice rifle and caliber. Have been shooting 140gr sierra gamekings but have bought some 120gr gamekings to try this year
