I have a few sets out kinda waiting for bird season to finsh before i get real hard into coyotes. I have one in particular that is a flat set with sheep skull as a backing of sorts. Weisers horse meat bait and Hawbakers red fox gland lure on the set. 3 feet away I have a scent post with red fox urine on it. I have a couple of bones on the side to somewhat funnel the coyote/fox to the trap. They were already there and i did not move them. They are slightly wider than i would put them myself though. Don't know why i didn't move them. Anyways set was made Tuesday and last night i got a coyote working the set very lightly. One paw print 8" away from pan and then rolled out for one reason or another. The question is this. In you alls opinion would you not touch a thing and let it continue to get worked, add urine to the backing of the site, or move the bones I have to funnel the animal in a little tighter to create a better chance to get on the pan.

Right now the leg bone on the right and left of the set are approx. 18-24" apart directly to the side of the trap.

My personal opinion is leave it alone and stay away from the set. I only get close enough to tell if the trap is sprung or dug about every 5th day, other wise I only get close enough to tell if I got a catch. If I can check with binoculars that's great. More than likely it's your scent that's making it cautious or the strong odor of the lure. Either way more activity or more scent wont help.

Leave it be. If you see the same thing happening again and again then it’s time to start changing one thing at a time until you figure it out. Sometimes coyotes just aren’t interested. Sometimes the set needs to “cool off” for a while before they will really work it.

If you start changing something every time a coyote visits a set and doesn’t get caught you’ll drive yourself insane, and still not catch em cause of too much activity at the set. It’ll be back around and maybe next time won’t be so lucky.

Thanks guys for the responses. My early season patience is lacking. It can set for sure. I got a cold front and weather coming in and am thinking that will help me out as well.

Yep stay away from the sets the coyotes might not come back through for a week or two. I found out that patients is a big thing when it comes to yotes.

Some coyotes do not like big stuff like skulls, remember coyotes are greedy cowards thay can be neophobic. Or the coyote may just not be ready to die.. I have more consistent response with small bones..

Just give it time.
I like more subtle sets but have been surprised sometimes by success at really big dirtholes, etc. So I'd just keep checking it from a distance and be patient and confident in what you set.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
