I was wondering if anybody with EXPERIENCE using a chainsaw for slabbing logs could recommend a saw and bar/chain combo that would handle up to 30" logs. Also a recommendation for 20" and less logs. Thanks guys/gals

Logosol Timber Jig. Different sort of setup from a true Alaskan sawmill but is very easy to use and cheap. You can also run a lot smaller saw because you don't need anything attached to the end of the bar like an alsakan. I have slabbed and worked 24" logs with my stihl 361 and only a 14" narrow kerf bar. A lot less wood loss to the saw and a lot less saw needed to cut. With an 18" bar you could easily handle a 30" log no issue. The trick to milling with a saw is the chain. Use a ripping chain and if you can run a narrow kerf bar use it. Get it sharp and keep it sharp. Change chains often and let them cool down before re-using them. Make sure if your saw has an adjustable oiler you have it maxed out as you cant use enough oil either. Clean logs is also a plus if you can help it. A little dirt will destroy a ripping chain in no time.

You want ripping chain: https://www.baileysonline.com/chainsaws/chainsaw-chain/ripping-milling-chainsaw-chain.html

Like the difference between using a crosscut handsaw and a rip saw.

I run a Stihl 661 with a 36" bar in my Alaskan Mill and in oak it is on the limit at what I can slab.

I’ve just got started milling posts and boards with an Alaskan and a MS 660 mag, and so far have gotten by with semi chiseled skip chain cut at about 20* . Has anyone here compared the full chisel chain with semi chisel chain ? Can’t complain about what I’ve been using ( accept for the short bar 25” ) but would like to hear if their is a big difference. Sorry for butting in bonehead but this is a great topic. Wish I had more answers for you than questions but I’m just getting started myself.

Experienced firewood cutters like semi. It takes more abuse, dirt etc.
Exp fallers like full, it may cut faster but looses its edge quicker. The loggers I know file often.
Exp rippers use rip chain.
These are generally speaking, many different kinds/types of chain.

I use semi and full depending on how clean the wood is.

I run semi chisel every day for felling and or bucking because of its durability, I would not run full chisel chain doing what I do . That being said I’ve only just begun running the mill . I’ve probably watched a few dozen comparison videos of 10* verses 20* verses ripping chain . Mostly what I’ve seen is a few seconds difference between each , with ripping chain being the fastest. I guess my biggest question is , what do most guys prefer making rip chain out of chisel or semi chisel chain ?

My ripping chains are semis and they are 10 degree. I have been considering getting a carbide chain just to see how it would last. Now though living where i live i don't think i will be doing much milling for a while lol. Kinda short on trees in this neck of the woods.

I'm a 25" guy I guess. Don't see many 30" ones. Also this video is done on white spruce which that and paper birch is all we have up here, and so oak etc would take a lot more time on cuts and need more power probably. Might pick up a hint or two from this however:
