I have lost mine and no longer have the hand strength to set them without them. the doesn't seem to be any stores in my are that still sell them. I would like to make my own. So, would someone be so kind as to send me the dimensions I need. I would like to know the rod dia., the over all length and the amount of bend there is on the open end. I think this will give me enough to fabricate them my self. Thank you in advance. If I buy one on line it would cost me at least 2.5 times the cost of the setter just for the postage

Yup, easy and cheap. Heat the end, lock in a vice, crank it over a bit. Find an old screwdriver with a red handle. You'll keep it longer.

If you know any mole trappers that use victor out of sights, they probably have a pile of setters that a vice and bolt cutters can convert them to DP setters quickly.

16 1/2" of 1/4" rod bent in U shape 1" wide. With angle grinder cut a small groove in each leg 1/4 " from end .

hope this helps.

https://www.cedarcreektraps.com/dog-proof-setting-tool - These are the easiest to set your DP's with. All those others work but not as easily as these.

Thank you for your responses … It is to the point that my body has caught up to my age. I know they say it is not your, but the miles traveled and what you did during those miles. Well, I guess I didn't treat my body and extremities very well. I never weighed more than135 # until I was almost 50 years old, but treated my body like I weighed 200 #, with lifting, digging and other things. Then was unfortunate enough to inherit Dupuytren's contracture, in my hands. If it were for various trap setters, I wouldn't be able to trap at all.

Just a word to the young people out there … TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY AND EXTREMITIES … while you are young and I am sure you thank me when you get to be my age.

My 4th great grandfather was a professional hunter and trapper and died at the age of 74, getting ready to go hunting and trapping … he was born in 1770 and died in 1844. It is reported that he sold a deer quarter for 25 cents. He lived in SE Ohio and killed bears, elk, woods buffalo, deer, wolves and probably anything else on 4 legs that moved. Reported also that he made a better living than most all of the farmers and raised 12 kids.

Well, I have managed to out live him and hope that when I die it is either getting ready to go trapping or out on the line.

Thank You again,

Garry-

I have a set of those setters Jayme. previous design. I don't know why I don't use them but they ride along every year and don't get used.

With filter pliers you can release a non target. I think that would be difficult with most professional setters

Actor- sounds like you got a lot of great advice. In addition to the setters, here's another option that may help you in the field. I use this for efficiency more than setting, I pre-charge all my DP's the night before, and cap them with a 3/4" PVC Plug. The effort to compress the spring with the PVC inserted is minimal because most of the springs force is already compressed. You could leave your setter on the benchtop and only bring it along for resets.

I have Griz traps and just used a straight screwdriver to set mine. Not a big deal or inconvenience to carry a screwdriver in your back pocket.
