I have some 4 coiled victor coilsprings I had planned on using for coyotes in Ohio this fall. At some point someone told me there are Ohio legal traps that would be way better to use for coyotes than the 4 coiled 1.5s. Can someone tell me if this is true. IF so what traps would be better than the 1.5s and how much better is this trap than the 1.5. Thanks

Do not consider the 11/2 a coyote trap.

In Ohio you can use a MB650 cast jaw (steel jaws need to be inside lam to work) as long as you are following the swivel requirements and. MB 550 and Bridger #2 size traps all fit inside the requirements as well. I lived there when they changed the laws and jaw spread requirements. There are a lot of traps that fit the bill. All netter than the 1.5's.

1.5 is NOT a coyote trap. Mb 550 is a good choice.

lots of suitable coyote combination traps for ohio....1.5 isnt one. 1.75 os are ok,,many good number 1.75 or 2. O.s. are my preferred method for high lever gripping and holding power and 2 coiled are sufficient. pm me if u want to chat...im in ohio too. steve

Size really matters
Can 1 1/2 hold coyotes some of the time yes on some good days.
The reason some of us ,use 3 size trap or even a victor 4, bridger3, or mb 650 , or mj 600. To name few is the percentage go up greatly with catch and most importantly holding a coyote.
And if you add snow on top of the trap you take away from its reach.
But really catching is not the issue it's the holding value of trap.
I was never much of a catch release fisherman either.

In Ohio you can use any trap on land that has less than 5 3/8" inside jawspread without modification.

Bigger traps up to 6" inside jawspread after modification must have: a footgripping surface width of 5/16" and three swiveling points.

The popular traps here are the #2 Bridger fully modified, both versions though I prefer the dogless. Mb550, the new bs extreme juniors, Duke 2s

Don’t know your specific regs but look at the KO Extreme inside laminated.

Have held a few coyotes in 1 1/2 sets intended for coon, have also had more than a few traps wrecked by yotes. All of my land sets are now 1 3/4 size or bigger. And most of those are modded to boot. We have big yotes running around here as you probably know, good luck.
