Do you ever use this on chunks of beaver meat for winter predator trapping? Someone at our state convention mentioned this to me as an option to keep meat working well for bobcat or fisher trapping.

salt is a good preservative. fwiw pickling salt isn't anything special. salt is salt is salt. sodium chloride. pickling salt is just salt without iodine. 50 pound bags of stock salt sold at feed stores is the cheapest salt most of the time

Pickling salt is generally a much finer grain salt. It does allow for faster penetration and dissolving. Like Danny said farm store, feed salt will suffice as well but is generally much more coarse in grain. For general trapper use I prefer the coarse grain for trapping anti freeze as it wont dissolve as quickly at a set. For preserving baits etc. bulk salt will work fine.

It should be stirred often for good contact in some applications and put into a brine to promote better penetration. For layering use keep it heavy and it will develop its own brine from drawing moisture from the meat on its own.

Just made up a couple gallons of carp chunks in pickling salt. Should be ready by december 1st for cages, dirtholes, pocket sets, whatever. Everything I trap likes salted fish.

I sometimes depends on how much time and how energetic I feel, ha ha. If my butt is dragging i chop bigger pieces to get done faster.
Mine in this bucket are about 3 inch to 4 inch sections of carp. grin

Thanks. I'll avoid paying xtra for pickling salt. I haven't decided if it'd be advantageous to salt chunks of beaver or muskrats that I use for bobcat & fisher trapping this winter. If I do, I guess I'll just use cheap salt. I have 2 beavers in the freezer, I just need to devise my plan. Have never used them before for bait. It takes years to get a bobcat tag in Wi.
