I have a 7 year old Kenmore ( Frigidaire) upright freezer that stopped working after a power outage/surge. The digital temp control unit on the door was not working , as in the high temp alarm never went off and the numbers were just dashes. No fan, no compressor, no cold. I bought a new temp control unit and popped it in the door. Freezer still doesn't work, no fan running, no compressor , just the interior light. The temp control unit goes from 1 to 7 like it should but still no high temp light . The control unit was $70, next step in the comp. starter relay and over surge relay on compressor. Shouldn't the fan run even if the compressor is not running ? Wife just wants to get a new one and not spend $50 more on parts that may not fix it. Any suggestions ? -Thanks

I should add there is no rattle or burn markes on the comp. starter relay. Also do I need to replace the over surge relay that is attached to the starter relay ? I wouldn't think it would have any effect on the comp. start up. -Thanks

Can you check voltage on comp side of the relay ? I would assume that some sort of temp sensor causes the comp to come on.

Could be a bad connection or a bad component. I would suggest testing for power at both the input and output sides of relay, test for power at compressor. If the light does not shine brightly it may indicate a faulty ground. A volt meter or a neon bulb tester connected between what should be a live wire and a metal part near the compressor should identify the problem. Be careful so power is not grounded through you. I would assume the temp control sends a signal to the starter relay. Wouldn't hurt to check the wire between temp control and starter relay.

The comp doesn't click , hum, and make any noise. Shouldn't the fan run even if the comp. doesn't run ? Other than the inside light the thing is dead.

Kyron4 do have the model and serial number. It sounds like the compressor is not getting power. The fan not running you said. I assume you are talking about the fan inside the freezer. If so that fan is controlled by a sensor that won’t allow it to run until the freezer is cold enough. I would check the defrost timer it’s usually on the bottom and is black or white and has a plug with four or five wires. It could have burnt out the timer motor and could be stuck in defrost. The defrost timer usually has a red button to push to take it out of defrost or it will have a stem in the center that you can manually turn clockwise and it will make clicking sound as you turn it. You need to keep turning it until you hear a loud click then it will be out of defrost mode and it will allow the compressor to run. I would leave the power on while turning the defrost timer and you should hear the compressor turn on. Defrost timers are about $20.

Danny I picked up a couple freezers one 5 and one 7 years old. Less than $30 fixed both and there both still running now had them both for 15 years now. I certainly wouldn’t recommend replacing a 7 year old freezer without diagnosis unless you have money to burn. Kinda like replacing your truck because the headlight is out to me.

Vermonster, Yes I have the model and serial number and parts are available . The temp control unit is a digital set up and freezer must be an auto defrost as other than setting temp level to 1 or 0 I see no setting on the control unit. I will look for the defrost timer when I get home later today.
