Thanks for sharing.

Got a chuckle out of this paragraph- "I also remember riding in the back of an old Model A Ford chasing after a coyote through the prairies. Of course, there were no roads in those days and very few fences, so it was wide open spaces that allowed for an engaging chase driving like the wind and shooting out the window at the wily coyote."

Like "posted" signs in 2019. Where did they all come from? They used to be far and between.

And why are people all of a sudden so faux-protectionist while themselves mostly not doing any outside-stuff? It's annoying. Really....if I stepped on your land, what would happen? I do like Cornell Univ. "posted" signs though... they say essentially "Don't trespass unless you ask us first" which I can understand.

“posted signs” are due to high property and school taxes here in NY. Therefore If I pay the taxes it’s my land to hunt, fish, and trap. The unfortunate truth is that in addition to the tax expense I also spend my money for posters . The pic an’t right. lol

Oh yes indeed I don't want anyone on my land unless I know about it. I guess what I was saying was... it seems everyone and their brother (that doesn't even hunt) feels the need to put up posted signs. When it wasn't that way when I was a kid. I find it offputting but that's just me. I use "selective signs" but I don't have my road-facing property plastered with them like it's Area 51 or something.

Problem is that the majority of the public are good people. It’s the small minority take make for increased poster sales.

I pretty much agree with your posting. I've not got a lot of land, and have never posted it...until this year. We typically have whitetails, a pile of muleys, and periodically elk and moose using our fields. Had a gomer with California plates stop and shoot a tiny little buck muley last year, 100 feet from the house, through a fence, basically in our yard. Mostly, the reason I posted the land is because of the garbage that "hunters" leave. Simply got tired of cleaning up after the slobs. My wife and I typically pick up two truckloads of garbage on the road up past our place every fall after the deer and elk seasons. Really disappointing how "hunters" take care of the land. We hunt our place, and anybody that asks can do so as well, long as they clean up after themselves.

Rant over...

Jack

080808 I think along the same lines as you do. I and three buddies have a land lease of 2300 acres and we don’t post it but I make a point of kicking people off that we find leaving garbage. We make a point of letting everyone we see on the property know about not leaving garbage and obey all game laws. There is one road in and we have a camp at the end of the road. So we usually have somebody who sees the vehicles parked there. It’s steep mountain hunting and not many deer and a lot of black bears. I guess that’s why they call it bear mountain.

You guys are down right hospitable compared to here. Most guys send some lead towards the trespassers instead of talking to them. I scared the shorts off a guy a few weeks ago . He and his wife were cutting some wood on my property right next to the road . I didnt care any I just wanted to see what was going on. Was nice to get to know them but you could tell all they wanted to do was get the Heck out of thete.

As a very young boy I went along when my father hunted and he never stepped on a piece of ground before speaking to the owner. I recall driving a long ways and time to find some of the owners. Most hunters then had enough class to ask first, signs were not as much needed.

I am old enough to remember some of those types of stories as they were told by the participant. In those days the story teller never started a story before cutting of a chunk of chew from his plug and get it moisten down good. Right after the first spit in the can he would start talking. As the story unfolded and got more dramatic, the more he would spit. I once saw a feller stop right in the middle of his tale, because his backy gave out and he didn't have any more with him.

In fairness, if I ever have problems I will post it with the exact legal spacing like you've never seen before. I just don't want to have to, and to my knowledge haven't had any issues except garbage flug from cars (which is insane). I picked up 4 trash bags worth of crap, a chair, and a computer monitor last month.
