I feel as though no one knows more about scents than a trapper. As a trapper who would you recommend makes the best deer scent. There is a lot of high dollar advertising selling deer scent but what do you think is the best all around or had the best results with? Are they all the same?

Code Blue sells a tarsal gland that comes packaged in a small jar. They are very effective. [Linked Image]

Scents are ok on young deer, not so much on older deer. People buy this stuff as a crutch. Learn to hunt and you won't need any crap that you see advertised that do nothing but take your money. Scout in the off season, learn where they live, set up based on your finds and play the window. Don't over hunt your spots. Hunt hot sign.

My trapping line is roughly 60 miles. I visited the locations yesterday and carried a trowel and some baggies. I walked field edges and where I found scrapes I scooped up some dirt and put it in a baggy. I figured there’s gotta be all kinds of urine residue in it. My plan is to scatter some over the scrapes where I’m hunting and spray a little water over it. I’ll let you know if it is effective or not.

I've used Bob Jamison's with success and I wouldn't hesitate to use some of Ron Jones (goes by Jonesie on here)

Red Man spit and human urine seems to do the trick as well as anything around here.
You may want to supplement with two cycle exhaust fume covered outerwear. The deer will assume that you are just working nearby and ignore you.
I dare anyone to prove me wrong. smile

I'll bet there's something to what you say. Loggers.

In my youth I used a wide variety of deer lures. All of them did little, ok ok, they didnt help me in the least. Scout your area, hunt the best looking spots. I dont use cover scents, lures, ozone machines, or scent eating clothes. Just make sure I wash hunting clothes well before season so the scent of the laundry detergent is gone. Then I usually dont wash my deer hunting clothes again till the end of the season. Your mileage may vary.

I don't use any of the attractants out there. The only scent I use is real skunk as a cover scent. I've had deer come from downwind and walk right up to my deer stand.

I just place a dirt hole set with a burned pine log as backing and spray some fox pee on it...guaranteed to bring in every doe with half a mile! Had to quit using fox pee on my line for just that reason. They will follow that scent to my stand when I spray it on the bottoms of my boots. Where there are does, there will be bucks!

There's some good info on this thread, especially by Jonesie. https://trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/6636625/1

Based on Jonesie's posts and PMs to me, I bought some of his Redneck's Pride lures and cover scents.

For years I would take a coni killed skunk and hang it about 20 yards upwind from my stand. I shot so many deer after trying that....
