Yep gonna have that ice that’s too thin to walk on and too thick too run the canoe on. Sure puts a damper on my rat trapping. Same thing happen last year, I never set a rat trap. Was actually hoping to do some rats this year.

Warroad river froze up yesterday 7 for the low yesterday,13 now and next week looks even colder,if we don't have strong winds I'm guessing the big lake will be froze up a week from now.Could be people ice fishing by Thanksgiving but wind will hamper that it usually breaks up 3,4 times because of the winds.

We still have high water which will be a pain if it freeze up when river is High.. I don't like when we get the wet snow on new ice and then freeze up. Nice when you can start out with at least clear good ice. Get that snow pack ice and it can be crap for days and can't see a thing threw it. Way easier to walk in to a bad spot with inch or two of wet snow over ice..

29 here in the middle of Ohio … calling for tomorrow night. There will be ice on the ponds Sunday when season comes in. I don't recall in the 72 years I have been trapping... ice here that early. That darn Climate Warming. First time I ever saw warming bring ice.

Yuppers.

Drove up the Wisconsin side from PDC to LaX and from there up the Minnesota side to Red Wing. 'Rat huts are in very short supply. River is still up.

I had a low of -4.4 last night. Deer season opens Friday and I can normally walk across the ice anywhere on the opener. So about normal here.

Having a freeze up early with high water and then having it recede and refreeze all winter will make us really earn our $4.50 winter rats. Miles or small rivers here with limited sign if any. Rats are finding the slough pockets and if we get deep ice there will be some winter migrations that are larger than we normally get.
