I noticed how the wild birds pick the coon fat clean off the carcass in the winter, would it be safe to give it to my egg laying chickens and turkeys ? Would it be better to render it down and make suet cakes vs "raw" globs of fat ? -Thanks

I'd freeze it first and kill the parasites maybe just don't feed them anything you used acetone on.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Do you treat it with anything to help it last longer in warm weather, or do you just us it in the cold months? Thanks

Everything the left touches it destroys

I have used 'coon and other furbearer blubber as woodpecker feed many times, and I used to toss beaver carcasses into the chicken yard as well. They will fight over the stuff. Nowadays about the only thing I use is bear fat. Since retiring and closing up my taxidermy shop I get a couple 5 gallon pails full of bear fat from a taxidermist in the county next door. I only hang it out on the trees (in wire cages) during cool/cold weather, otherwise it gets to stinking fairly fast.

The question to ask is whether the fat will affect the flavor of the eggs. If you feed chickens carp the eggs will take on a fishy flavor.

Our chickens pick off carcasses all winter off and on. They love coon fat, but everything loves muskrat and beaver best.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I have thrown carcasses to my free range chickens for years......no impact other than it increases their protein and fat. They will pick at the fat more than the meat.....

I usually pile carcasses outside my shed and leave for picking until spring and then haul to the ditch. When I finish my coons, I scrape the fat onto floor, pick up and dump 5 gallon buckets of fat, trimmings at a time. Many times you can draw quite a few eagles around here if you pile your carcasses very far from your house. In north Missouri, I hauled my carcasses to a neighbor and he wanted to watch the eagles eat from his front window - we had over 65 eagles at one time we were feeding. He had an old cow die - he hooked it up and drug it to the feed pile and eagles cleaned it up in 3 days other than some large bones they could not carry off.
